‘The Parsifal Mosaic’ Release Date and Cast Sam Worthington and Sofia Carson Lead Hulu Series
Robert Ludlum’s name has become synonymous with modern spy thrillers, famously inspiring the Jason Bourne franchise. However, ‘The Parsifal Mosaic‘ has been waiting for its moment to shine on screen for years. A film adaptation was first announced by Universal in 2009, initially with Ron Howard set to direct, followed by Zhang Yimou, but the project ultimately stalled.
The 1982 novel begins with Michael Havelock witnessing the murder of his partner and lover, double agent Jenna Karas, at the hands of his own agency. Left with nothing, he decides to leave the spy world behind. But when he unexpectedly spots her alive on a crowded railway platform in Rome, everything changes.
This shocking sighting turns Havelock into a target, pursued by both American and Russian assassins. He soon finds himself ensnared in a web of deceit orchestrated by a high-level mole known as Parsifal.
Now, the story is finally getting a new life as a television series. Sam Worthington and Sofia Carson are set to star and executive produce a drama adaptation of the novel, currently in development at Hulu, as reported by Variety. Worthington will portray Havelock, while Carson will take on the role of Jenna Karas.
This small-screen adaptation comes from Legendary Entertainment, with writer Wes Tooke at the helm. Tooke previously served as showrunner on USA Network’s ‘Colony’ and contributed to Amazon’s ‘Jean-Claude Van Johnson’. He will executive produce alongside Ben Smith and Jeffrey Weiner of Captivate Entertainment, director Seth Gordon, and the two stars.
Smith and Weiner are not new to this material, having previously produced the earlier Universal film attempt with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. Their ongoing involvement suggests a long-standing commitment to bringing this story to life.
The official synopsis emphasizes themes of betrayal. After years of perilous work for the CIA, Havelock is ready to retire when he discovers that his partner Jenna, who is also the love of his life, has betrayed him. This revelation leads him to unravel a powerful global conspiracy.
Worthington is widely recognized for his role in ‘Avatar’, and he reprised his character Jake Sully in ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’, which grossed an impressive $1.490 billion at the box office. The film became available on Disney+ and Hulu on June 24, creating a nice connection to his upcoming role in a Hulu spy drama. This marks a significant shift from the fantastical world of Pandora.
Carson has also established a strong presence in streaming, starring in Netflix hits ‘Purple Hearts’ and ‘Carry-On’, both of which debuted at No. 1 on the Global Top 10 Films list. Her romantic drama ‘My Oxford Year’, which she executive produced, premiered on August 1, 2025, and topped charts in 73 countries.
Taking on an executive producer role here continues her trend of shaping projects behind the scenes while also leading them.
The book combines espionage with a poignant love story, providing the series with an emotional depth that extends beyond typical spy narratives. One reviewer even dubbed it the ultimate break-up novel of the spy genre. If the series leans into this romantic tension, it could distinguish itself from more conventional spy dramas.
The source material is also set against a unique historical backdrop, focusing entirely on the Cold War and the looming threat of nuclear conflict. How the series will navigate this setting or adapt it for contemporary audiences remains to be seen.
With Ludlum’s readership estimated between 300 and 500 million copies, there is a built-in audience of thriller enthusiasts. This, combined with a talented cast and a streaming platform known for serialized drama, gives ‘The Parsifal Mosaic’ a strong chance to finally succeed.
