Marvel Studios has a history of revisiting its past, but few re-releases have had the significance of transforming a cherished conclusion into the beginning of something larger. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ provided a farewell to the Infinity Saga’s first generation of heroes, a moment fans have long regarded as untouchable, making any effort to expand upon it a real gamble.

This gamble is precisely what Marvel undertook with ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ a theatrical re-release hitting theaters on September 25, running approximately 185 minutes—about four minutes longer than the original version. Instead of merely polishing the film for a nostalgia trip, Marvel utilized the additional runtime to film brand-new scenes during the production of ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ effectively creating a narrative link between the two films.

The four new scenes serve as this connection, reshaping the way the conclusion of ‘Endgame’ relates to the multiversal chaos that awaits viewers in December. The most striking alteration occurs during Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter’s final dance, a moment fans have cherished since 2019, which is now interrupted by a knock at the door.

That unexpected visitor is Loki, appearing in his Time Variance Authority uniform after sacrificing himself at the end of ‘Loki’ Season 2 to maintain the multiverse. His arrival raises an intriguing question, as Steve technically shouldn’t exist in this universe following his time-travel decision, and the TVA is specifically tasked with tracking down individuals who create unstable branches like his. Instead of punishing Steve, later footage indicates that Loki actually assists the couple in avoiding detection, allowing them to quietly enjoy the family life hinted at in ‘Doomsday’ trailers.

However, this small act of kindness comes at a price, as the branch Steve created appears to be linked to the larger multiversal catastrophe unfolding in the new footage.

At TVA headquarters, another new scene features Mobius, Ouroboros, and Casey observing what initially appears to be a routine incursion between Earth-10005, the original Fox X-Men universe, and Earth-1127. What starts as a single collision quickly escalates, with Mobius witnessing Earth-7355 and Earth-0557 terminate in real time before the count swells to approximately 3,000 universes colliding simultaneously. The sequence concludes with Ouroboros stating that the multiverse is collapsing, a line that strongly suggests the TVA’s involvement in ‘Doomsday’ itself.

The film’s third new scene takes place after the events of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ showing Bruce Banner confined in an underground bunker working on a serum to control his transformations following his mind-controlled rampage in that film. Just as he is about to finish, Doctor Doom breaks in, prompting Bruce to transform into the Hulk to confront him as the scene cuts away, confirming for the first time that the Hulk will play a role in ‘Doomsday.’

The final surprise occurs at the end of the credits, where the original ‘Endgame’ famously featured only the sound of Tony Stark hammering metal in a cave, a nod to his origin in 2008’s ‘Iron Man.’ The new footage reveals what is creating that sound: Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., crafting his own mask by hand. Since Downey previously played Tony, this image serves as a pointed visual rhyme, transforming a sound cue once associated with a hero’s origin into a subtle warning about the villain now donning his face.

Together, these four scenes demonstrate that ‘Endgame Encore’ is not merely relying on nostalgia; it actively redefines how the conclusion of one saga sets the stage for the next. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to hit theaters on December 18, with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ following in December 2027 to wrap up the Multiverse Saga.
