‘Bridgerton’ Star Masali Baduza Shines at Netflix’s First UK Upfront Event
Netflix has been developing its advertising business in the United States for years, but this week marked a significant step in its UK expansion. The company hosted its inaugural UK Upfront event in Central London, gathering executives, advertisers, and a star-studded lineup to present upcoming British and international programming.
The event served as both a business pitch and a glamorous showcase, with Netflix emphasizing its growing influence in the region. According to Barb, Netflix’s ad-supported plan now reaches over 14 million viewers in the UK, nearly one in four people nationwide, a statistic the company highlighted while engaging brands and advertisers present.

Baduza, a South African actress hailing from East London, Eastern Cape, initially made her mark in theatre before transitioning to international television with her lead role as Sephy Hadley in the BBC drama ‘Noughts + Crosses,’ which aired from 2020 to 2022. She has since become a recognizable face for Netflix audiences through her role as Michaela Stirling in ‘Bridgerton,’ where she appeared in the season three finale and continued into the latest season.

In addition to her television work, Baduza has also appeared in films, including a role as Fumbe in ‘The Woman King’ alongside Viola Davis, as well as earlier projects like ‘Bhai’s Cafe’ and the South African series ‘Trackers.’ This blend of British period drama and international film has established her as one of the more prominent rising stars in Netflix’s talent roster.

Netflix executives framed the Upfront event as a declaration of their advertising ambitions in the region. Ed Couchman, Netflix’s Head of Advertising UK, opened the event by stating that Netflix is no longer viewing itself as an underdog in the market, citing the platform’s increasing subscriber engagement as proof.
Amy Reinhard, Netflix’s President of Advertising, also addressed the audience about the company’s capability to merge content with data-driven advertising technology, while Anne Mensah, the company’s VP of Content UK, stressed the significance of standout programming in a competitive streaming landscape. The presence of stars like Baduza alongside major figures such as Pugh and Knightley highlighted Netflix’s commitment to its UK original programming as part of its advertising strategy.
As Netflix continues to roll out its ad-supported tier across the UK and the broader EMEA region, appearances like Baduza’s are expected to become more common as the streamer leverages star power to attract both viewers and advertisers.
