Few Marvel heroes have experienced as many tonal shifts as Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder, whose journey has varied significantly depending on the director. From the Shakespearean royalty depicted in the character’s early films to the comedic sidekick under Taika Waititi’s guidance, Thor has rarely maintained a consistent emotional tone.

This inconsistency has left fans guessing which version of Thor will appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ especially considering the mixed reactions to his recent portrayals. With the over-the-top comedy of ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ and the more subdued “Fat Thor” from ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ audiences have been curious about the character’s next direction.

Director Joe Russo has provided some clarity. In a conversation with CBR, Russo confirmed that ‘Doomsday’ will revert Thor to the version seen in ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ presenting a more hardened and driven portrayal compared to his recent comedic or emotionally deflated appearances.

“It’s fascinating how malleable he is playing that role, and the range that he has,” Russo remarked. “He has a wide array of directors with different tastes and different tones that have interpreted the character. We have a specific point of view on that character. That’s what we’re going to carry forward, the Infinity War Thor.”

Russo elaborated on what this mindset will look like on screen, describing Thor’s arc in ‘Doomsday’ as a continuation of unresolved grief expressed through battle. “We love that sort of warrior version of him, that warrior who has lost everything, who is seeking meaning through battle,” Russo explained. “Will he ever find it or not? That is the journey he will go on against the greatest foe he’s ever met. As you can see from the trailers, it’s going to be a hell of a fight.”

This framing aligns with what little has been disclosed about Thor’s path since ‘Endgame.’ In the years between films, Hemsworth’s character has been traveling and raising his adopted daughter Love, whom he took in after Gorr’s death in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder,’ while reportedly adopting a more reflective approach that includes praying to Odin for strength.

Fan theories suggest that Thor might unlock either the Odinforce or Thorforce within ‘Doomsday,’ although neither has been confirmed by Marvel or the Russos. Regardless of any potential power-ups, Russo’s comments indicate that Thor is being positioned as a central, battle-hardened figure rather than comic relief as he heads into the film’s climactic confrontation.

Russo also reflected on the earlier, more controversial version of Thor seen in ‘Endgame,’ addressing the character’s physically and emotionally deflated arc that some fans found jarring. Co-director Anthony Russo noted the emotional risk involved in that portrayal, describing it as watching Hemsworth fully commit to the character’s lowest point, weight suit and all.

When asked whether that ending was meant to set up a broader team-up between Thor and other MCU characters, Anthony Russo clarified that the choice was simply about narrative fun rather than long-term franchise planning. “No, no, we just thought it was fun to do,” he said, describing the chemistry between characters as an unexpected but entertaining pairing given their previously adversarial relationship.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to premiere in theaters on December 18, Thor’s return to a fiercer, more focused version of himself provides fans with a clearer understanding of where the character stands as the franchise approaches its next major showdown.
