Marvel Studios has been working hard this year to assure audiences that superhero fatigue isn’t the doom some industry analysts predicted. The early figures for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ are providing the studio with ample evidence to support this claim. With several months still to go before its release, the film’s advance ticket sales are already being compared to one of the year’s major box office hits.

That benchmark is ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which achieved a record-breaking domestic opening and became one of Sony’s top successes this year. Any film that can measure up against such a high standard, especially this far ahead of its release, is bound to attract industry attention.

According to tracking data from the BoxOfficeTheory forums, which quickly circulated within Reddit’s r/boxoffice community, ‘Doomsday’s’ presales at 83 days before its release have already outpaced the pace that ‘Brand New Day’ had set with just 21 days remaining before its own debut. The same tracking indicates that preview grosses could exceed $60 million, with $70 million being a possibility.

Such a preview total would place ‘Doomsday’ in an elite category, comparable to the openings of only the biggest blockbusters in recent history. ‘Brand New Day’ itself garnered $72 million from its Wednesday evening and Thursday preview screenings, while ‘Avengers: Endgame’ earned $60 million from its Thursday night previews back in 2019.

Disney’s sales strategy for ‘Doomsday’ has been notably aggressive compared to typical blockbuster campaigns. Tickets first went on sale on July 20 alongside the film’s initial trailer, initially limited to premium formats, generating $16.5 million in the first 24 hours, according to Variety, before expanding to all theaters and showtimes during D23 in August.

This early push has resulted in consistently strong tracking updates throughout the summer. After its first two days of wide availability, ‘Doomsday’ was running approximately 65% ahead of the pace set by ‘Brand New Day’ during the same comparable window, according to TheWrap. Presales reached $35 million by August 19 and surpassed $55 million by mid-September, with over 70% of those early sales directed toward premium format screenings.

For context, ‘Brand New Day’ did not cross $40 million in presales until about 40 days before its release, while ‘Doomsday’ achieved that milestone with nearly 100 days still on the clock. This timing difference makes the comparison particularly noteworthy, even considering that Disney opened sales significantly earlier than Sony did for its own release.

Tracking firm Global Box Office has estimated an opening weekend between $260 million and $300 million domestically for ‘Doomsday,’ placing it in the same league as ‘Endgame’s’ $357.1 million debut and ‘Brand New Day’s’ $360 million opening. These projections remain estimates rather than confirmed figures, and various factors could still influence the trajectory before December.

Nonetheless, the early data indicates a genuine audience interest in the return of the Avengers brand, coupled with the unique twist of Robert Downey Jr.’s transition from Iron Man to Doctor Doom. Whether this enthusiasm remains steady through the holiday release window is yet to be determined, but for now, the numbers are providing Marvel with plenty of reasons for optimism.
