Alan Ritchson’s ‘Motor City’ Achieves Major Streaming Success After VOD Release
The box office figures for a film often don’t reveal its true staying power, particularly for action thrillers that gain traction after debuting on digital platforms. While some movies quickly fade post-VOD release, others manage to maintain a strong presence.
‘Motor City‘ has firmly established itself in the latter category, continuing to perform well on one of the industry’s most monitored streaming charts long after its initial release.
As reported by FlixPatrol, ‘Motor City’ has just completed thirty days on Amazon VOD’s Top 25 Movies chart in the United States, showcasing a full month of consistent ranking. This longevity is particularly impressive for a film that debuted with modest box office numbers.
Directed by Potsy Ponciroli, ‘Motor City’ tells the story of John Miller, portrayed by Alan Ritchson, a working-class romantic in 1970s Detroit who becomes entangled with a local gangster’s girlfriend. After being wrongfully imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit, Miller embarks on a quest for revenge against the man who ruined his life.
The film adopts a minimalist storytelling style, relying on a rock soundtrack and Ritchson’s physical, action-oriented performance to convey much of the narrative, with minimal dialogue. The cast also features Ben Foster, Pablo Schreiber, Lionel Boyce, and Shailene Woodley.
‘Motor City’ premiered in the Venice Spotlight section of the Venice International Film Festival in August 2025, ahead of its U.S. theatrical release on July 24, 2026. Despite a production budget of thirty million dollars, the film earned only about three million dollars domestically during its theatrical run.
This modest box office performance makes its current streaming success particularly noteworthy. Since its VOD release, the film has consistently attracted viewers, achieving a level of chart presence that its box office numbers did not predict.

For comparison, ‘Motor City’ still trails behind several other long-standing titles on the same Amazon VOD chart. Sydney Sweeney’s psychological thriller ‘The Housemaid’ leads with an impressive two hundred and thirty-three days, while Chris Pratt’s video game adaptation ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ has maintained its position for one hundred and nineteen days.
Guy Ritchie’s ‘In the Grey’ and the biopic ‘Michael’ also feature on the list, with one hundred and fourteen and one hundred and four days respectively. In this context, ‘Motor City’ reaching the thirty-day mark places it among films that have demonstrated real staying power beyond their initial release.

Ritchson has gained recognition in recent years for leading stripped-down, hard-hitting action films, and ‘Motor City’ fits this trend well. The film’s emphasis on atmosphere and physicality over dialogue-heavy storytelling seems to resonate with viewers streaming it at home, even if it didn’t achieve a strong theatrical opening.
Whether ‘Motor City’ can eventually rival some of the longer-running titles on the chart remains uncertain, but achieving a full month on Amazon’s Top 25 is already a significant milestone for a film that entered its digital release with modest expectations. It serves as a reminder that streaming success and box office performance do not always align.
For fans of straightforward, action-driven filmmaking, ‘Motor City’ has evidently found its audience, even if that audience arrived a bit later than the theatrical release schedule suggested.
