Celebrity romance speculation has turned into a modern spectator sport, with fans and tabloids treating every public sighting as breaking news. Few stars navigate this dynamic better than Dakota Johnson, who has dealt with intense curiosity about her personal life for years.

The scrutiny intensified recently when she was seen with Machine Gun Kelly, just weeks after reports of her breakup with musician Role Model. Instead of remaining silent, Johnson chose to confront the ongoing chatter directly.

Dakota Johnson had the ideal response for those overly invested in her personal affairs, stating that every day brings something ridiculous on the internet, true or not, and she simply doesn’t care anymore.

Johnson made these remarks during the Friday, September 25 episode of Vogue’s “The Run-Through” podcast, explaining why she no longer feels the need to correct false narratives about her love life. “Even if I go to dinner with my manager or my lawyer, it’s like, ‘Seen with mystery man.’ I also don’t care,” she shared on the podcast hosted by Chloe Malle.

She elaborated that trying to clarify the truth is simply not worth the effort anymore. “I think it’s just, kind of, futile,” Johnson noted, adding that people will believe whatever narrative they choose, regardless of her public statements.

“People are gonna believe what they wanna believe, and I don’t have the energy to fight for that,” she continued. “I would much rather focus on other things in my life. Every day, there’s something on the internet that’s ridiculous and true or not true, and I don’t care, like, get a life.”

That candid closing line quickly became the highlight of the interview, showcasing the unfiltered energy Johnson is known for during press appearances. It aligns with her broader approach to fame, where she consistently opts for honesty over carefully curated talking points.

During the same conversation, Johnson revealed that she has intentionally stepped back from social media to protect her privacy, a choice that reflects her preference for focusing her energy elsewhere rather than engaging with online speculation.

Her comments come amid increasing attention surrounding her connection with Machine Gun Kelly, whom she reportedly met through mutual friends Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce earlier this year. The two were spotted enjoying a low-key date night in New York City, and Johnson later attended the Vogue World: Milano fashion show to support him.

Before addressing the rumors so directly, Johnson had taken a more guarded approach. In an earlier interview with Vogue published on September 18, when asked about her love life, she simply replied, “I don’t want to say anything about that,” before softening slightly and laughingly admitting that the musicians she tends to date “like me” and that the feeling is mutual.

This earlier reluctance makes her recent comments feel like a deliberate shift, as she chooses to tackle the swirling speculation on her own terms rather than avoiding the topic altogether. Fans have responded positively, praising her refusal to conform to the typical celebrity relationship narrative.

For an actress who has faced scrutiny over everything from her dating history to her red carpet fashion choices, this latest moment feels less like a slip and more like a clear statement of intent. Johnson is no longer interested in managing the narrative and is comfortable expressing that openly.

Whether the internet will heed her advice and find something else to focus on remains uncertain, but Johnson has made her stance clear regardless.
