Florence Pugh Channels Old Hollywood Glamour on ‘Tonight Show’ Ahead of ‘East of Eden’ Release
Late-night couches mark the beginning of a major publicity season, and few stars make an entrance quite like Florence Pugh. Following a series of high-profile releases including ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘Dune: Part Two’, ‘We Live in Time’, and ‘Thunderbolts’, she took a brief hiatus from the limelight. However, her recent appearance on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ signals that her break is officially over.
This timing is intentional. Pugh appeared on Monday’s episode alongside Josh Hartnett and musical guest Gracie Abrams, with another stop on ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’ scheduled for Wednesday. This marks a significant NBC late-night push within a single week.
The standout moment on social media was undoubtedly her stunning look. Pugh donned a black off-the-shoulder mini dress with a draped neckline, paired with strappy black platform heels and a delicate choker. Her golden locks were styled in soft, voluminous waves, and she beamed against the show’s sparkling New York skyline backdrop.

Her styling struck a perfect balance between polished and playful, fitting for an actress set to lead a period drama. The vintage-inspired waves combined with the sleek little black dress created a memorable red-carpet-meets-late-night moment, giving fans plenty to share online as the photos quickly circulated.
However, the conversation with Fallon wasn’t solely about glamour. Pugh and the host engaged in dramatic monologues created by autofill, a segment promoted by the show’s official account as one of the night’s highlights. This lighthearted bit provided a fun contrast to the serious material she is currently promoting.

The serious material she is promoting is Netflix’s ‘East of Eden’, which begins streaming on Thursday. This limited series is Zoe Kazan’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, featuring Pugh as the cunning antihero Cathy Ames. All seven episodes will be available at once, eliminating the need for a weekly wait.

The series also has a family connection behind the scenes. Kazan’s grandfather, Oscar-winning filmmaker Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film adaptation featuring James Dean. She has emphasized that her version takes a markedly different approach, stating that the original film was not a faithful adaptation of the small portion of the book it covered.
Kazan clearly envisioned Pugh for the role of Cathy. She told Netflix Tudum that she had no backup choice, declaring, “I think she’s a genius.” This is high praise from the individual who wrote and executive produced all seven episodes.

Pugh is not alone in the Trask family saga. Christopher Abbott portrays Adam Trask, while Mike Faist plays his brother Charles. The cast also includes Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, and Ciarán Hinds. The narrative follows Cathy as she creates a rift between two brothers, igniting a saga that spans two generations.
Behind the scenes, Garth Davis directed episodes 1 through 4, while Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre helmed episodes 5 through 7. Kazan serves as co-showrunner alongside Jeb Stuart, and Pugh is also an executive producer.
If the promotional blitz seems intense, her upcoming schedule clarifies why. ‘Dune: Part Three’ is set to hit theaters on December 18, with Pugh reprising her role as Princess Irulan under director Denis Villeneuve. This means she has a Netflix prestige drama and a blockbuster sequel arriving within weeks of each other.
Looking ahead, she is set to lead and produce ‘The Midnight Library’, where she will portray Nora Seed, a woman who discovers a library between life and death, offering her the chance to explore all the potential lives she could have lived. Paramount reportedly secured the project in a $36 million deal, outbidding Focus Features and Sony. Pre-production is anticipated to commence this autumn, with filming slated to begin next year.

For now, the focus is on Cathy Ames, and Pugh’s late-night appearance marks the beginning of a very busy period. With her vintage glam and playful autofill monologues, she appeared completely at ease. Whether the series will resonate as well as her Fallon appearance remains to be seen once fans start streaming.
