Studios often seize opportunities to extend the life of a blockbuster, and this fall is no exception. Disney’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ re-release recently grossed $86 million globally, including $26 million in the U.S. Such impressive figures certainly catch Hollywood’s attention.

Now, Sony is reportedly considering a re-release of its own box office sensation, sparking excitement among fans of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. This film has been rewriting box office records all summer, achieving a staggering $360 million during its opening weekend and accumulating $950.7 million domestically and $2.5 billion worldwide.

What has fans particularly intrigued is the news that the re-release will include additional footage, featuring Rosario Dawson’s character, Claire Temple. According to an exclusive report from Deadline, there will be more surprises in the extra content as well.

For those unfamiliar with Marvel’s Netflix series, Claire is the nurse who tends to the city’s vigilantes. She appeared in the first two seasons of ‘Daredevil’, as well as in ‘Jessica Jones’, ‘Iron Fist’, ‘Luke Cage’, and the crossover series ‘The Defenders’. Claire is a significant link within that segment of the MCU.

Her return would mark a significant moment, being her first MCU appearance since the second season of ‘Luke Cage’ in 2018 and her debut in an MCU film. This makes it a noteworthy comeback for a character who has been absent for quite some time.

Fans have long suspected that there were scenes left on the cutting room floor. At a GalaxyCon panel in Raleigh, North Carolina, Dawson revealed that she filmed a scene for the new Spider-Man movie that was ultimately cut. She expressed her enthusiasm for the character and her desire to reprise the role of Claire.

The scene in question reportedly depicts Dawson caring for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in a hospital setting after he wakes up, before it was replaced by Jon Bernthal’s Punisher to enhance the emotional weight. This scene would occur right after the Punisher brings Spider-Man to the hospital following a gunshot intended for Jean Grey.

Restoring this scene could also bridge a narrative gap. Claire’s connections to the New York vigilante community would clarify how Frank Castle and Jean Grey managed to get Peter treated without revealing his secret identity. Sometimes, a deleted scene serves as essential connective tissue that the theatrical cut may overlook, and this could very well be one of those instances.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton has previously discussed the existence of additional material. He mentioned to TheWrap that a version of the film was tested with an extra 30 minutes, although he stated that the theatrical version remains his preferred cut. This implies that a wealth of footage exists, even if not all of it is intended for theatrical release.

The lack of confirmation only fuels speculation among fans. Some are wondering if other ‘Daredevil’ stars, like Vincent D’Onofrio, might make an appearance, although nothing has been verified. The Marvel street-level characters have a history of intersecting with Spider-Man’s universe.

Charlie Cox portrayed Matt Murdock in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, where he provided legal advice to Peter. He later donned the suit again for ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ on Disney+. A cameo from Claire would align with this trend.

There are still many unanswered questions. No release date has been set for the re-release, and further details remain undisclosed. Sony has not commented on the matter.

The strategy used for ‘Endgame’ might offer some insight. Its re-release served as a promotional push for December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and included new short scenes. Sony and Marvel could adopt a similar approach to maintain momentum.

The stakes at the box office are significant. The film is on the verge of becoming the first to surpass $1 billion in North America, so a re-release could help it achieve that milestone. TheWrap notes that a $20 million opening for a re-issue would be sufficient to reach this goal, a feat never accomplished before.

The global competition is also fierce. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ currently holds the No. 2 spot all-time worldwide with $2.885 billion, while ‘Brand New Day’ ranks No. 3 with $2.49 billion. A second run featuring new scenes could make the race even more thrilling.
