Few literary adaptations come with as much history as ‘East of Eden’. John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel has seen previous adaptations, notably Elia Kazan’s 1955 film featuring James Dean, which garnered 4 Oscar nominations. Now, Netflix’s new limited series, penned by Kazan’s granddaughter, faces the challenge of living up to that legacy.

The series debuted on Oct. 1, with all 7 episodes released simultaneously. Zoe Kazan wrote the series and co-showruns alongside Jeb Stuart, while Florence Pugh stars as Cathy Ames and serves as an executive producer. Garth Davis directed the first four episodes, and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre helmed the final three.

Initial reviews are in, and the results are promising. The Rotten Tomatoes page for the series displays a strong average Tomatometer, although the Popcornmeter audience score is yet to be posted. This early feedback indicates a largely positive critical reception, though scores may fluctuate as more reviews come in.

Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War through World War I in California’s Salinas Valley, the story follows the Trask and Hamilton families as they reenact the tale of Cain and Abel. Netflix describes the series as a modern interpretation that brings new focus to Cathy, the novel’s unforgettable antihero. The cast also features Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask, Mike Faist as Charles Trask, along with Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, and Ciarán Hinds.

Pugh’s performance stands out as a highlight. NME referred to the series as a brutal American epic driven by Pugh, praising her as consistently outstanding. Variety noted that Pugh and Hoon Lee embody the heart of the adaptation, portraying Cathy as a calculating figure with psychopathic traits.

Other reviews echoed this sentiment. Radio Times awarded it 5 out of 5, calling it a compelling and thoughtful adaptation that expands on Steinbeck’s themes with a contemporary touch. IndieWire described Kazan’s adaptation as magnificent, highlighting a series that blends dread and beauty effectively.

Collider characterized the show as a faithful yet bold interpretation, presenting Cathy as a woman who must become dangerous to survive in a male-dominated world. Alta described it as delightfully monstrous, pointing out that Kazan frames Cathy’s narrative in dimly lit, claustrophobic settings. But Why Tho remarked that it understands the enduring nature of Steinbeck’s work, expanding on the tragedy rather than dismissing the past.

Not all critics were entirely convinced. Screen Rant rated the series 6 out of 10, describing it as a stiff and subdued adaptation despite Pugh’s strong performance. The review suggested that the series focuses too heavily on Cathy, neglecting other characters, and that some aspects feel formulaic.

Even the more critical reviews generally agree on Pugh’s standout performance. This leaves the series with a clear consensus on its lead, while reactions to the overall structure vary. Several reviewers noted that the modern portrayal of Cathy may divide audiences.

Critics have also cautioned that the series is not an easy watch. NME pointed out that, alongside moments of lyricism, ‘East of Eden’ can be quite harrowing. The narrative begins with Cathy arriving at the Trask brothers’ home in poor condition, and the serious tone persists throughout the generations that follow.

This aligns with the source material, which delves into themes of guilt, envy, free will, and self-destruction. Kazan has mentioned that she was captivated by Steinbeck’s introduction of Cathy when she first read the book as a teenager. The adaptation’s focus on this character marks a significant departure from previous versions.

With the entire season now available, viewers can judge for themselves whether the series meets its initial acclaim. Netflix’s fall lineup is packed, but a strong critical reception and a prominent lead give ‘East of Eden’ a promising start. Its performance on the streamer’s weekly charts will be the next aspect to monitor.
