‘Office Romance’ Star Jennifer Lopez Faces Backlash Over Umbrella Behavior at Paris Fashion Week
Jennifer Lopez certainly knows how to make an entrance, and Paris Fashion Week provided yet another opportunity for her to shine. Known for her striking appearances at Paris shows, including a memorable long camel dress reminiscent of a trench coat at a Dior Haute Couture presentation, this time the weather stole the spotlight alongside her outfit.
The event in question was the Stella McCartney show on September 30, where the 57-year-old singer and actress took her place in the front row. The spring presentation celebrated water, featuring an “under the sea” theme, but the unexpected rain added an extra layer to the experience for attendees.
Lopez appeared visibly frustrated when organizers requested she close her umbrella during the downpour. Seated in the front row, this meant she had to endure the rest of the show in the rain after being asked to comply.
The situation reportedly began upon her arrival, as her seat was wet, prompting her to stand aside while a bodyguard dried the chair. After sitting down, she initially ignored a request to close the umbrella that a fellow guest had passed to her.

When the request was reiterated, Lopez reportedly responded with a brief “Oh” while continuing to tap on her phone, as her bodyguard held the umbrella over her. Eventually, she handed the umbrella to a staff member, showing visible displeasure.
Media coverage of the event varied, with the AP describing Lopez under an umbrella in the front row, which aligned with the heavy rainfall, though it didn’t capture the full extent of the back-and-forth.

Regardless of the umbrella controversy, Lopez’s outfit was a standout. She donned a faux-fur shawl over McCartney’s layered Sable midi dress, complemented by a black veil. This ensemble was part of the Stella McCartney AW26 collection, and images from the event showcased the stylish brown fur wrap and dotted veil.
The faux fur was particularly fitting, as McCartney’s brand is known for its commitment to sustainability, never using leather, fur, or feathers. Lopez was not alone in the front row; she shared the space with Juliette Binoche, while Kelsea Ballerini, Miranda Kerr, and Kat Graham were also among the notable guests.
Binoche, a friend of McCartney through their shared advocacy, kept her comments modest, stating to WWD after the show, “I’m not a great analyst, I just know that I love what she does.”
The collection itself carried a significant message, as McCartney declared war on the fishing industry, marking 25 years of her label. The runway was set in the British ambassador’s gardens, where she highlighted the language used to describe marine life, contrasting “sea life” with “seafood.”
She also pointed out the environmental impact of fishing, noting that for every fish caught, nets also ensnare dolphins and octopuses, with much of the catch returned dead. The runway echoed this cause, featuring dolphins on T-shirts, as noted by the AP’s coverage.
The clothing showcased a soft approach to the message, with a palette that included seafoam, sage, coral, blush, and chocolate. Tailoring, influenced by Savile Row’s Edward Sexton, was designed to flow like water, with drawstrings incorporated into oversized blazers, a detail that resonated with the rainy evening. Models walked to PJ Harvey’s “Down by the Water,” with Karlie Kloss and Miranda Kerr showcasing wave-themed looks.
Beyond the runway, McCartney has been active in sustainability efforts. A week prior to the show, she co-founded The Climate Pledge Fashion Coalition with Amazon and the forest nonprofit Canopy, uniting over 60 companies. At the show’s conclusion, she appeared in jeans, a white T-shirt, and her signature baggy blazer, giving the audience a thumbs-up and a thank-you before disappearing backstage.
Eventually, the rain subsided just in time for models like Karlie Kloss and Amber Valletta to grace the runway. For Lopez, however, this may have been little consolation after her time spent in the elements.
