Marvel Studios is gearing up for the final phase of the Multiverse Saga, aiming for a trilogy-like approach with its upcoming Avengers films, ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’, which are set to release a year apart. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is scheduled for December 18, 2026, followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on December 17, 2027.

The release date has shifted multiple times. Initially slated for May 1, 2026, ‘Secret Wars’ was later moved to May 7, 2027, before settling into its current December 2027 slot. According to Deadline, these changes were made due to the expanding scope of both films, which are directed by the Russo brothers.

Recently, a report from the X account Cosmic Marvel on October 1 indicated that ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is expected to begin filming from January through late April or May. Despite these delays, Marvel reportedly plans to maintain the December 17, 2027 release date, as stated by insiders ApocHorseman and DanielRPK.

The timeline has been in flux for weeks. DanielRPK initially reported that filming would be pushed to November, while Apocalyptic Horseman later suggested it might start in January instead. DanielRPK confirmed Apocalyptic Horseman’s timeline, indicating filming would commence in January 2027. Earlier reports had anticipated production to begin in August or early October.

Fans are understandably anxious about the timeline. If filming wraps in late April or early May, post-production would only have 7 to 8 months to prepare a film of this magnitude for December 2027. In contrast, ‘Doomsday’ began filming in spring 2025, wrapping in September of the same year, with post-production extending over a year, totaling approximately 20 months.

Murphy’s Multiverse pointed out that while 13 months is typically sufficient for most films, the extensive additional photography for ‘Doomsday’ has raised concerns regarding its sequel. The outlet noted that Marvel Studios has not indicated any plans to alter the release date for ‘Secret Wars’, which is still listed as December 17, 2027, on Marvel’s official movie page.

There is a counterpoint to consider. Some reports suggest that filming ‘Doomsday’ first could streamline the process for the sequel, as the Russo brothers, cast, and crew would be transitioning from one project to another with fresh momentum. Earlier reports indicated that some scenes for ‘Secret Wars’ were filmed during ‘Doomsday’ reshoots.

The Russo brothers mentioned earlier this year that they are still working on ‘Doomsday’ and will likely continue until November, while also being in what they describe as pre-production for ‘Secret Wars’. This indicates a significant workload as they manage two massive projects simultaneously, which has already impacted the schedule.

The cast is shaping up to be impressive, with Robert Downey Jr. confirmed to portray Doctor Doom, and Noah Jupe reportedly taking on a significant role. Sadie Sink is expected to reprise her role from ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, and Benedict Cumberbatch has confirmed his return as Doctor Strange.

As always, the filming schedule comes from insider sources rather than an official Marvel announcement, so it’s wise to approach these details with caution. Nevertheless, if the reports hold true, Marvel is banking on a quick turnaround to deliver the finale of the Multiverse Saga on schedule.
