Few cinematic moments are as iconic as Tom Cruise sliding across a hardwood floor in a dress shirt, socks, and sunglasses. This unforgettable scene from 1983’s ‘Risky Business’ played a pivotal role in establishing him as a Hollywood star. Recently, he resurrected this classic dance in a completely different context.

The nostalgic moment occurred during a promotional stop for ‘Digger’, his latest film directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Cruise made an appearance on ‘The Jennifer Hudson Show’ on Tuesday, Sept. 29, where the show’s famous Spirit Tunnel transformed into a nostalgic reunion with his legendary dance. The clip quickly went viral.

For those unfamiliar, the Spirit Tunnel is a pre-show segment where staff line a hallway at Warner Bros.’ Studio 1, singing a personalized song to welcome each celebrity guest. NPR has referred to it as a backstage ritual and a viral phenomenon, serving as a measure of a celebrity’s cultural relevance.

As Cruise stepped out of his dressing room, the staff greeted him in black sunglasses, singing a remix of Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock & Roll.” This is the same track that accompanied his dance in ‘Risky Business’, where a young Cruise famously slid across the floor in his underwear and a shirt. The producers cleverly modified the lyrics to highlight his status as a cinematic icon.

Cruise embraced the moment wholeheartedly. According to Variety, he donned his own black sunglasses, danced along, and even invited some staff members to join him. Although some of his hand claps were slightly off-beat, he was just as enthusiastically engaged as he is during his daring stunts in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ series.

At 64 years old, Cruise clearly understood the assignment. Hudson mentioned she invited him after their meeting at the World Cup final this summer, and Cruise revealed he regularly watches the show. The show’s Instagram hinted that the internet wasn’t prepared for Cruise, and the clip garnered a flurry of reactions.

The hallway was bustling, with TheWrap reporting a record turnout for the tunnel. One fan noted that the only other time it was this crowded was during Michelle Obama’s visit. Another commenter remarked that Cruise’s appearance elevated the show’s profile significantly.

On air, Cruise humorously mentioned that staff had to pull him out of the tunnel because he wanted to dance with even more people. He also quipped that anyone who can’t enjoy the Spirit Tunnel isn’t truly alive. Entertainment Tonight highlighted how he remained focused on the dancing staff, which fans praised as a testament to his commitment to his audience.

Hudson also inquired about the original ‘Risky Business’ scene. Cruise recalled every detail of filming it and credited director Paul Brickman for providing him with the opportunity. He joked that he used to dance around in his underwear as a child, making the scene feel natural.

‘Risky Business’ also featured Rebecca De Mornay, Joe Pantoliano, Curtis Armstrong, Bronson Pinchot, Richard Masur, and Raphael Sbarge. The film earned Cruise his first Golden Globe nomination, and its dance scene remains one of the most parodied moments in cinematic history.

The episode included another dance highlight when Hudson invited actress Debbie Allen to recreate a clip that went viral in November 2025, showing Allen and Cruise dancing together at a party at the Debbie Allen Dance Academy in Los Angeles. This served as a playful reminder of Cruise’s love for dancing.

This appearance coincides with the release of ‘Digger’ in theaters. The film is a satirical black comedy where Cruise portrays Digger Rockwell, a Texas oil tycoon embroiled in an ecological disaster. He described this role to Hudson as a significant departure from his typical characters.

The film’s box office prospects appear uncertain, with Variety estimating a domestic opening of only $12 million to $15 million across 3,300 screens, and some critics have been quite critical. In this context, a joyful moment like the Spirit Tunnel clip serves as a valuable promotional asset.

Regardless of the film’s box office performance, the clip showcases that Cruise still possesses the charisma that initially captivated audiences. For many, watching him slide back into the ‘Risky Business’ groove is a nostalgic reminder of why they fell in love with him in the first place.
