Christopher Abbott Reflects on ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Experience and Promises ‘X-Men’ Will Shine
Casting for the MCU’s ‘X-Men’ reboot has become one of the most talked-about events in Hollywood this year, with Christopher Abbott landing the prestigious role of Charles Xavier, also known as Professor X. As he looks back on his previous experience in a comic book film, Abbott’s comments regarding ‘Kraven the Hunter’ are certainly making waves.
Abbott has been delivering memorable performances since his debut in ‘Martha Marcy May Marlene,’ often in bold, director-driven projects. His latest role in Sony’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’ saw him portray The Foreigner, a hitman with the ability to hypnotize others through eye contact. The film, released in 2024, managed to gross only $61.9 million worldwide and currently holds a disappointing 15% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Recently, Abbott opened up about his experience on the film with remarkable honesty. During a conversation with Josh Horowitz on Happy Sad Confused, he admitted, “I didn’t know what I was doing” while filming. He expressed that he never fully grasped what his character’s powers were meant to be.
He humorously noted that no one on set could provide him with a clear answer, and he even joked about not remembering what his costume looked like. Abbott mentioned that he has “sort of buried that deep” and sensed during filming that things were not going well.
Despite this, the actor holds no grudges. He praised his co-stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Alessandro Nivola and acknowledged that director J.C. Chandor encouraged him to take the role, as he was curious to see how a project of that scale operates. Abbott also joked that his friend Chandor “owes me big time.”
When Horowitz directly asked him if ‘X-Men’ would be better than ‘Kraven the Hunter,’ Abbott confidently replied, “I will guarantee you that.” This bold promise comes from an actor who is well aware of what a misfire feels like.
Abbott expressed his eagerness for a more stable setup this time around. He is looking forward to collaborating with director Jake Schreier and shared that he has a deep-rooted connection to the franchise, recalling his childhood love for the cartoon, comics, and toys. For him, this isn’t just about joining a Marvel project for the sake of it.
‘X-Men’ is scheduled for release on May 5, 2028, with a screenplay penned by Joanna Calo, Lee Sung Jin, and Michael Lesslie. Adam Driver will portray Mister Sinister, creating an interesting dynamic since both actors rose to fame playing love interests on HBO’s ‘Girls’ without ever sharing screen time.

‘Kraven the Hunter’ marked the sixth and final installment in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, effectively concluding that experiment. Nevertheless, Abbott received praise for his unsettling portrayal of The Foreigner, making his candid reflections feel more relatable than insulting, as they shed light on the challenges of working on a blockbuster that struggles to find its footing.

Marvel’s next era is set to begin following ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars,’ with the X-Men finally joining the franchise. Fans will be watching closely to see if Abbott’s guarantee holds true.
