For years, fans of two iconic toy franchises from the 1980s, ‘Transformers’ and ‘G.I. Joe’, have dreamed of seeing their favorite characters collide on the big screen. The long-rumored crossover movie has been a mix of hope and disappointment, with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura first hinting at plans back in 2013.

Despite the idea being shelved for a time, it resurfaced in 2021 when Paramount began actively developing the project again. The 2023 film ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ even teased the crossover with a post-credits scene featuring Noah Diaz being approached by a G.I. Joe recruiter. Paramount officially announced the crossover at CinemaCon in 2024, hiring Derek Connolly to write the script, with Chris Hemsworth reportedly interested in the lead human role.

However, the dream has come to an end. On October 1, Paramount announced that Bradley Cooper would star as Duke in Danny McBride’s new ‘G.I. Joe’ film, as reported by Deadline. The crossover with ‘Transformers’ is no longer in development.

McBride’s film has been described as a reimagining of the franchise, with plot details kept under wraps. It is said to follow Cooper’s Duke and a team of Joes in Springfield, a town secretly controlled by Cobra. This announcement puts an end to years of speculation, although some fans on X expressed that they were not surprised due to the lack of updates.

The crossover lost traction amid various setbacks for Hasbro’s film adaptations. ‘Snake Eyes’ underperformed in 2021, and ‘Transformers One’ grossed only $129.4 million despite receiving positive reviews. Its director later indicated that Paramount Animation had no interest in a sequel.

McBride’s pitch also sheds light on the shift in focus. Initially, he proposed a movie centered on the Dreadnoks, a lesser-known aspect of the franchise, but Paramount insisted that ‘G.I. Joe’ needed a solid foundation before any crossover could occur.

Corporate changes added to the uncertainty. Anthony Ramos, who starred in ‘Rise of the Beasts’, revealed that the merger between Paramount and Skydance created a lot of ambiguity surrounding the project.

Cooper is stepping into a role that was previously held by Channing Tatum. McBride is directing the film based on a script he co-wrote with Jeff Fradley and John Carcieri, marking it as one of the first ‘G.I. Joe’ films under the new Paramount Skydance leadership.

Meanwhile, ‘Transformers’ is not disappearing. Jason Fuchs, co-creator of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’, is reportedly working on a new film that continues Noah Diaz’s story, albeit without the Joes. Rumors of Michael Bay’s return are also circulating, and Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison has emphasized that revitalizing the franchise is a top priority. The ‘Transformers’ series has amassed an impressive $5.2 billion to date.

Nonetheless, it’s hard not to feel a sense of loss for the crossover that could have been, with Optimus Prime and Duke finally sharing the screen.
