Managing a superhero universe during a corporate sale is a challenging endeavor, and the fate of James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios has been a topic of speculation for months. Since November 2022, the duo has held the position of co-CEOs at DC Studios, and each merger announcement has sparked questions about their future. Fans have been eager to know if the creators of the DCU would remain amidst ownership changes.

Their performance has seen ups and downs. While ‘Superman’ grossed approximately $618 million globally last year, ‘Supergirl’ faced significant challenges, debuting to just $37.1 million domestically and concluding with a global total of $126.4 million against a budget of around $170 million.

Now, there seems to be clarity, at least for the immediate future. According to Puck, Gunn and Safran are expected to continue their roles at DC following the completion of the Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery merger. The $110 billion deal is anticipated to finalize on Tuesday, Oct. 6, although the involved parties have reportedly chosen not to comment.

The same report indicates that Warner Bros. film executives Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy are likely to exit. Paramount film leaders Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein are set to oversee both studios, positioning Gunn and Safran as the prominent figures remaining after the leadership transition.

This news aligns with previous indications. In August, an insider informed TheWrap that Paramount had no intention of replacing the duo, and DC Studios executive producer Lars P. Winther mentioned that Paramount CEO David Ellison had met with them. Bloomberg also reported last year that Ellison aimed to maintain the creative teams of both studios.

However, there is a significant caveat. Gunn’s contract is said to expire in 2027, right after ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ and insiders from Cosmic Book News indicate that no new extension is currently in place. These sources anticipate a honeymoon phase of three to six months at the merged company before any changes are made.

‘Man of Tomorrow’ is set to release on July 9, 2027, with Gunn at the helm as writer and director. Some analyses suggest this could be a pivotal moment for the duo, arguing that if it surpasses ‘Superman’ in earnings, Paramount would have ample reason to retain them. Conversely, if it underperforms, the new leadership might steer DC in a different direction.

On a positive note, ‘Supergirl’ amassed 304 million minutes viewed on Nielsen’s streaming chart within its first four days on HBO Max, propelling it to the top of the platform. The HBO series ‘Lanterns’ garnered 525 million minutes in the same week, and a second season of ‘Creature Commandos’ is anticipated next year.

Looking ahead, the theatrical schedule is also noteworthy. ‘Clayface’ is slated for release on Oct. 23 as the final DCU film of 2026, with a projected budget of around $40 million. Meanwhile, ‘The Brave and the Bold,’ the DCU’s Batman reboot with Andy Muschietti attached, still lacks a release date.

Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman Part II,’ which exists in the separate Elseworlds continuity, is scheduled for Feb. 18, 2028. Gunn has also confirmed that Batman will not feature in ‘Man of Tomorrow.’ With numerous developments underway, a sudden leadership change could necessitate a reboot of the franchise just a few years after the last one.

For now, it appears that the leaders of the DCU are secure, but the countdown to 2027 has begun.
