Few TV franchises have been as influential as ‘Baywatch.’ During its original 11-season run, the series became the most-watched show globally, airing in over 200 countries and attracting more than a billion viewers weekly. Its iconic slow-motion beach runs and signature red swimsuits became synonymous with pop culture, prompting Fox to capitalize on that nostalgia with a reboot.

The journey to this reboot has been lengthy. Fremantle began exploring a revival as early as 2018, with Fox joining the project in 2024, committing to a script and a penalty. The network granted a straight-to-series order for 12 episodes in 2025, later shifting the premiere from fall 2026 to January 2027. An open casting call in Marina del Rey attracted over 2,000 aspiring actors.

On October 2, Fox unveiled four new teaser promos for the ‘Baywatch’ reboot, each spotlighting a pair of stars. The featured pairings include Stephen Amell and Jessica Belkin, Hassie Harrison and Noah Beck, Shay Mitchell and Brooks Nader, along with Livvy Dunne and Thaddeus LaGrone. The series is set to premiere in January on Fox, with episodes available on Hulu the following day.

These teasers provide a closer look at the new ensemble in their lifeguard roles. They follow an initial teaser released in May, where Amell shared a slow-motion promo on Instagram, and a second teaser over the summer. Those earlier clips emphasized the franchise’s signature style, featuring the tagline ‘same beach, new blood.’

Amell stars as Hobie Buchannon, a legacy character who has matured into a Baywatch captain, following in the footsteps of his father, Mitch, originally portrayed by David Hasselhoff. His life takes an unexpected turn when Charlie Vale, played by Belkin, arrives at his door. She is the daughter he never knew he had, eager to uphold the Buchannon family legacy and become a lifeguard.

Mitchell portrays Trina, Harrison plays Nat, LaGrone is Brad, and Beck takes on the role of Luke, while Nader plays Selene, a rival Zuma Beach captain. In recurring roles, original series star David Chokachi returns as Cody Madison, with Mary McDonnell as Gayle and John Beckwith as Julian. Dunne makes her acting debut as junior lifeguard Grace, and Erika Eleniak is also set to reprise her original role as Shauni McClain.

‘Baywatch’ is co-produced by Fox Entertainment and Fremantle. Matt Nix of ‘Burn Notice’ serves as showrunner and executive producer, alongside McG, Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, Doug Schwartz, Dante Di Loreto, and Mike Horowitz. McG also directed the series premiere, with Berk, Bonann, and Schwartz being the creators of the original series.

Production commenced on Venice Beach on March 16, 2026, with the cast photographed in the franchise’s iconic red swimsuits. Fox’s promotional materials promise all the adrenaline-fueled rescues, complex relationships, and beachside heroics that characterized the original, now featuring an entirely new cast and contemporary issues. Fox Television Network president Michael Thorn has described it as one of the most iconic and beloved television franchises in history.

The cast features a blend of actors and social media personalities. Amell is widely recognized for his role in ‘Arrow,’ while Dunne is a former LSU gymnast and influencer. Nader, a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, is also making a significant leap into acting.

This unique casting mix has sparked considerable discussion online, with fans debating whether influencer casting aligns with the franchise’s legacy. The previous major film adaptation, a 2017 feature starring Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson, approached the material as a comedy, while Fox seems to be taking a more serious direction.

With teasers now being released and a January premiere on the horizon, the reboot is gearing up for its promotional phase. Whether it can recapture the cultural phenomenon of the original remains to be seen.
