Few celebrities express their love for Middle-earth as passionately as Stephen Colbert. The late-night host has long been recognized as a devoted Tolkien fan, even making a cameo as a Lake-town spy in ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’. In 2019, he directed a short film set in Middle-earth titled ‘Darrylgorn’, featuring Peter Jackson and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ stars Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, and Elijah Wood.

Fans were thrilled when Colbert’s dream project was announced on Tolkien Reading Day, March 25. He was co-writing ‘The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past’ with his son, Peter McGee, and franchise veteran Philippa Boyens, with Peter Jackson producing. Colbert and Jackson had spent about two years developing the script.

The narrative draws from six chapters of ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ that Jackson did not adapt in his 2001 film. Set 14 years after Frodo’s passing, it follows Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they retrace their journey’s initial steps. Sam’s daughter Elanor discovers a secret that could jeopardize everything.

However, there is now a significant setback. The Mellon Heads podcast reported that the newly formed Skydance is putting the movie on “pause” for the time being. This information comes from an exclusive by Knight Edge Media, which indicated that filming for ‘Shadow of the Past’ was rumored to begin shortly after ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ wrapped in New Zealand. The post noted that the project is “not fully cancelled but not looking good”.

According to the report, significant changes in executive leadership have occurred since the Warner Bros. merger with Paramount. Colbert developed the film at Warner Bros., but he is now subject to the decisions of Paramount CEO David Ellison. While he may continue working on drafts, filming is not anticipated in the near future.

Other outlets have echoed this report, stating that the film is not entirely cancelled. World of Reel, referencing Knight Edge Media’s sources, mentioned that the new studio wants to assess how ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ performs before greenlighting additional projects. It also highlighted that Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, the executives who supported the project, are no longer with the company.

These claims originate from a single exclusive report and have yet to be confirmed by the studio. The coverage reviewed does not include any official statements from Skydance or Warner Bros. regarding the film.

The timing coincides with a significant corporate shake-up. Paramount’s approximately $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery was approved by a federal judge, with the companies announcing an anticipated closing date of October 6. Reports indicate that the merger is complete or nearly complete, making the exact status of the film worth monitoring.

Ellison also revealed that the merged entity would be named Skydance, as reported by Screen Rant. Meanwhile, Colbert was working on the film while concluding his CBS show, ‘The Late Show’, which wrapped up in May.

The silver lining for Tolkien enthusiasts is that Andy Serkis’ ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ remains unaffected. It is already in production, and reports state that nothing will hinder its progress. The film is slated for release in 2027 and is set between ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, following Aragorn and Gandalf’s quest for Gollum.

This film now serves as a litmus test for Middle-earth under the new ownership. If it performs well, ‘Shadow of the Past’ could be revived. Conversely, if it underperforms, Colbert’s dream project may remain in limbo.

For a franchise built on epic journeys, this represents yet another delay.
