Tom Cruise has long been Hollywood’s most reliable box office star. His collaboration with Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu for ‘Digger’ was positioned by Warner Bros. as a significant awards contender. In this film, Cruise steps outside his usual action hero role, opting for a satire instead.

The premise is intriguing. Cruise portrays Digger Rockwell, a billionaire oil tycoon responsible for an ecological disaster that he must rectify. Warner Bros. has marketed the film as a comedy of catastrophic proportions, featuring a talented supporting cast that includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons.

However, the release has been disastrous. ‘Digger’ opened with just $20 million globally and is on track to become the biggest box office bomb ever, potentially surpassing ‘The Marvels’. The film is projected to conclude its run with under $50 million worldwide, resulting in a loss of over $200 million for Warner Bros., which had a production budget estimated between $160 million and $180 million, plus an additional $100 million in marketing costs.

The opening figures are bleak. According to Variety, ‘Digger’ fell to $8 million from 3,321 North American theaters, with an additional $12 million from 73 international markets. Competitors speculate that the domestic total may be closer to $7.5 million once final numbers are confirmed.

Budget estimates vary. Warner Bros. initially greenlit the film at $125 million, but reports suggest costs have escalated to between $160 million and $180 million due to prolonged production. A spokesperson for Warner Bros. disputes this figure.

The studio also invested around $100 million in global marketing. Variety estimates that the theatrical break-even point is approximately $350 million globally, while Warner Bros. claims it is $300 million. Regardless, ‘Digger’ is set to incur a theatrical loss of at least $150 million to $200 million.

This places it among the most significant box office failures. ‘The Marvels’ is often cited as the largest bomb in raw dollar terms, with an estimated loss of $237 million for Disney, based on a $270 million budget. Variety notes that ‘Digger’ is poised to be “potentially” one of the biggest bombs ever, making the Global Box Office’s claim a projection rather than a definitive conclusion.

This opening marks the worst of Cruise’s career in decades. It is his weakest debut since ‘Lions for Lambs’ in 2007, which had a budget of only $35 million. IndieWire has compared ‘Digger’ to historic flops such as ‘John Carter’, ‘Cutthroat Island’, and ‘The Lone Ranger’.

Warning signs were apparent before the release. Thursday previews yielded only $1.2 million, compared to $3.1 million for last year’s ‘One Battle After Another’, which went on to open at $22 million. Independent forecasts had not predicted an opening exceeding $20 million.

Compounding the issue, ‘Verity’ opened to $32.6 million the same weekend, and ‘Digger’ was outperformed by ‘Resident Evil’ and ‘Primetime’ as well.

The reception has been mixed. The film currently holds a 52% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, marking Cruise’s first rotten film in nine years and Iñárritu’s first as well. Audience scores are more favorable, ranging from 71% to 72%, but CinemaScore awarded it a C+.

Critics have praised the production values and Cruise’s performance, although some argue that the satire prioritizes style over substance. An NPR critic enjoyed the film but cautioned that many viewers might dislike it. As one analyst noted, expectations should align with what the movie aims to achieve rather than the typical offerings associated with the Cruise name.

There is an additional twist. ‘Digger’ marks Warner Bros.’ final release as an independent studio before its merger with Paramount Skydance, which is set to finalize on Tuesday. The financial fallout will impact Warner Bros. and producer Legendary Pictures.

For fans, the hope remains that ‘Digger’ will find a second chance through awards recognition or streaming platforms.
