Will ‘Lanterns’ Get a Season 2? HBO’s Silence Raises Questions
The burning question in the DC Universe is whether there will be a ‘Lanterns‘ season 2. The first season concludes on HBO and HBO Max tonight, yet there has been no official announcement regarding a renewal for a second season.
This uncertainty has left the finale feeling like a cliffhanger itself. Fans are eagerly searching for any indication that the Green Lantern drama will continue, and the mixed messages from HBO, James Gunn, and the show’s creative team have only intensified speculation surrounding ‘Lanterns’ season 2.
As of October 3, HBO has not officially renewed the series. This means that any information fans are receiving about a potential second season is either a hopeful sign or an educated guess.
The most encouraging sign came directly from Gunn. When a fan on Threads asked him to clarify that tonight’s episode is a season finale and not a series finale, he confirmed, stating, “Season finale, correct.” Many fans interpreted this as a renewal in disguise.

However, a final season also concludes with a season finale. Gunn did not respond to follow-up questions about whether this meant a second season is on the way.
HBO’s Casey Bloys has not provided much reassurance either. When Deadline inquired about any active developments at DC, Bloys replied, “No, not right now,” with Gorilla Grodd being the only exception. He also omitted ‘Lanterns’ from the list of shows HBO is promoting for next year’s Emmys.
On the creative side, there is movement. Cocreator Damon Lindelof mentioned in an interview that showrunner Chris Mundy has already initiated a new writers’ room to brainstorm fresh stories for the series. This is a strong indication that the creative team is not viewing season 1 as the conclusion.
A report from Nexus Point News provided further details, stating that Mundy is expected to lead the room, with Christopher Cantwell, Nakkiah Lui, Zack Whedon, Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, and Vanessa Baden Kelly joining the writing staff. Baden Kelly, who wrote the season 1 episodes “Trust Fall” and “OutKast,” is the only returning writer from season 1 besides Mundy.
However, there is a significant caveat. The team is reportedly developing pitch pages to present to the network, and HBO executives are interested in continuing the show but are still awaiting those pitches. While having a staffed room is a promising step, it is still far from a greenlight.
Another notable change is on the horizon. Lindelof and Tom King, who cocreated the series with Mundy, will not be returning for a second season if HBO gives the green light.
In terms of ratings, the numbers suggest a case for renewal. The premiere attracted 9.3 million global viewers within its first three days, including 6.6 million in the United States, ranking among the five biggest series premieres in HBO Max history. Variety has reported that the series averages nearly 19 million viewers globally.
However, not everyone interprets these figures as a definitive win. One analysis suggests that HBO’s initial numbers appear less impressive once inflated figures are removed, and the network has not celebrated weekly milestones as it did for ‘The Last of Us.’ The same analysis highlights the absence of a season 2 order despite seven episodes having aired.
Fans often compare this situation to ‘The Penguin.’ That series averaged over 27 million viewers per episode yet still did not receive a second season. Thus, high viewership alone has not guaranteed renewal for HBO shows.
If ‘Lanterns’ does return, the core duo is expected to reprise their roles. Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre are likely to return as Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Pierre’s future in the DC Universe appears to be continuing even without a confirmed second season, indicating that John Stewart’s story will progress regardless.
The narrative could also delve deeper into cosmic themes. The season 1 finale’s late pivot into a more sci-fi oriented storyline hints at a stronger focus on cosmic lore if the show is renewed. The central mystery surrounding Hal Jordan’s death remains unresolved, even after the turmoil in Rushville.
Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner is another character to keep an eye on. Fillion first portrayed the character in ‘Superman’ and has since reprised the role in ‘Peacemaker’ season 2 and ‘Lanterns.’ Whether his journey continues on HBO or transitions fully to the big screen adds to the intrigue surrounding the renewal question.
Currently, the evidence points in two directions. A staffed writers’ room, strong viewership, and Gunn’s careful wording suggest optimism, while Bloys’s straightforward response and the lack of an Emmy push indicate caution. After witnessing Hal and John’s story reach its initial significant conclusion, do you believe HBO will bring the Green Lanterns back, or has the network already made its decision regarding Rushville?
