Few superhero series have dedicated an entire season to unraveling a single mystery quite like this one. The finale of ‘Lanterns’ brings closure to that mystery, delivering more emotional weight than explosive action.

The HBO series debuted on August 16, 2026, and concluded its 8-episode run on October 4. The very first episode ended with Hal Jordan being shot in the head at the Rushville football field, leaving viewers to ponder the identity of his killer.

The culprit is revealed to be Sheriff Kerry Kane. After Hal confronts her about her son’s secret, he shares plans for their escape, which frightens her enough to shoot him between the eyes. She immediately regrets her decision.

The finale begins in 2016 as the siege of Rushville concludes, with Kerry discovering a bloodied Hal in the wreckage of a motel. The narrative then jumps forward a decade to show Kerry picking him up from prison, marking the beginning of their complex relationship.

Their romance starts in secrecy before becoming public, despite the town’s lingering animosity towards the former Green Lantern. These moments are significant as Hal begins to envision a future in Rushville, only to have it snatched away.

The town’s hostility escalates to violence. Hal’s home is firebombed, leading him to appear dead, but he miraculously wakes up on the floor of the Macon slaughterhouse, saved by Kerry’s son, Noah. Noah possesses the ability to regenerate Hal’s burned skin, a trait he inherited as a Manhunter.

This regenerative ability comes from Zoe’s machine, previously used on Kerry’s severed finger. Additionally, Noah secretly commissioned Sinestro to create a lantern for a ring while grappling with his own identity.

Sinestro initially hoped Hal would use this power to kill Noah but shifted his focus to John once Halogram arrived on the desolate planet.

Noah ultimately releases Hal, advising him to let go of the past. However, Hal confronts Kerry, who is already aware of her son’s true nature. Her loyalty is unwavering, as she would do anything to protect Noah, even at the expense of the man she loves.

Co-creator Chris Mundy confirms that Kerry was always intended to be the killer, a decision made early in the writing process. The Hollywood Reporter reports that this plot point remained unchanged. Damon Lindelof noted that the team was aware from the beginning that Hal’s death would be genuine.

John digs up Hal’s corpse to reclaim the ring, but this time he doesn’t have to compromise his morals. Noah kidnaps him, seizing the ring and driving him to the stadium, where both understand the threat they pose to one another.

Noah even urges John to kill him, but John refuses, seeing reflections of himself in Noah: one was designed to be a Manhunter, while the other was destined to be a Green Lantern. The line “You take the stars, I’ll take the dirt” encapsulates the episode’s theme.

John then recites a Green Lantern oath of his own, crafted specifically for the show, which mirrors his character arc. Mundy explained to Gold Derby that John’s journey to the ring was unlike any other.

The season concludes with John using the Green Lantern signal in Rushville to summon Guy Gardner, setting the stage for John’s next appearance in next year’s ‘Man of Tomorrow.’

Not everyone found the finale satisfying. A critic from Forbes described it as a largely predictable conclusion to a lackluster season. However, the creators maintain that a more action-packed ending was never intended, as they prioritized the emotional narrative between Hal and John.

Mundy stated clearly, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, that there was never a version of the finale that leaned more towards action.

There is no post-credits scene, and a second season has not been confirmed. Mundy mentioned that future storylines are still in the discussion phase, suggesting that if a second season occurs, it would focus on John handling grounded cases on Earth while Guy explores cosmic adventures.
