John Cena has transitioned seamlessly from wrestling rings to action sets and comedies, and now he is taking the lead in a family adventure inspired by one of the world’s most iconic toy brands. ‘Matchbox: The Movie’ is a live-action feature produced by Apple Original Films, Skydance Media, and Mattel Studios, drawing inspiration from Mattel’s renowned die-cast vehicle line.

Premiere nights for films like this often feel like family gatherings, and Cena is rarely seen without his wife, Shay Shariatzadeh. She has been by his side for numerous premieres, including ‘Ricky Stanicky’ in March 2024, marking his second premiere of the year after ‘Argylle.’

This time, the couple’s appearance on the red carpet has captured fans’ attention. They attended the world premiere at the AMC Lincoln Square Theater in New York City on Monday night, October 5, where Cena walked the carpet alongside Shariatzadeh.

A brief clip shared by Entertainment Tonight features the couple standing closely together amid the bustling photographers and crew. Cena donned a striking green plaid suit complemented by a red pocket square, while Shariatzadeh dazzled in a shimmering olive-green sequined gown with a high neckline and cap sleeves.

The online response was overwhelmingly positive, with Entertainment Tonight noting that the couple had hearts racing. This is not their first charming red carpet moment, as Cena has previously credited a film set for bringing them together.

Cena was joined by co-stars Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Arturo Castro, and Teyonah Parris. Biel looked stunning in a Dolce & Gabbana ensemble, while her husband, Justin Timberlake, showed his support by attending the premiere, although he did not pose for photos on the red carpet.

The cast has been actively promoting the film, with Apple hosting a special screening in Mexico City featuring the same group of stars prior to the New York event.

Apple describes the film as an action-packed, globetrotting adventure about a group of childhood friends whose lives are turned upside down when their long-absent former leader returns to their small town. This leader, Sean, portrayed by Cena, inadvertently pulls the group into a frantic international mission to save the world.

The cast also features Corey Stoll, Bill Camp, Danai Gurira, and Golshifteh Farahani. Biel plays Aimee, Richardson plays Crosby, Castro plays Ted, and Parris plays Charmaine, as detailed in Apple’s listing.

Directed by Sam Hargrave, known for ‘Extraction’ and ‘Extraction II,’ the film’s screenplay is penned by David Coggeshall, whose credits include ‘The Family Plan’ and ‘Orphan: First Kill.’ The production team includes David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger for Skydance, along with Robbie Brenner and Ynon Kreiz for Mattel Films, and Jules Daly.

Mattel highlights the rich history behind the brand, noting that Matchbox die-cast cars have been around for over 70 years, with two cars sold every second somewhere in the world. The name originated when a young girl’s school friends began requesting a matchbox car.

The film is rated PG-13 and has a runtime of 2 hours and 6 minutes, according to Apple’s listing. Fans won’t have to wait long, as the film premieres globally on Apple TV on Friday, October 9.

For now, the premiere has provided a delightful glimpse of Cena off-screen before he steps back into the spotlight as a globe-trotting CIA agent.
