‘Ted Lasso’ Star Shares Jason Sudeikis Always Planned for Ted to Step Down as Season 5 Uncertain
The latest chapter of ‘Ted Lasso’ has dramatically reshaped the landscape of the beloved sports comedy. The Apple TV series wrapped up its fourth season with a coaching shake-up that has left fans speculating about the show’s future. Now, one of its stars is shedding light on how this pivotal decision came to be.
Spoiler alert: this article contains details about the finale. The episode, titled ‘The Departing Lass’, aired on Wednesday and altered the roles of nearly everyone on the coaching staff at AFC Richmond.
Brendan Hunt, who portrays Coach Beard and co-created the series, revealed that the decision for Ted to step down was initiated by Jason Sudeikis. Hunt shared with Variety, “That was something Jason wanted to happen from the beginning of the writers’ room.” He emphasized that Sudeikis viewed this move as essential to the season’s narrative.
This twist also comes with a note of caution regarding the show’s future. Hunt acknowledged that there are no guarantees for a fifth season, mentioning that Sudeikis tends to keep his cards close to his chest, and the team has always hoped to return for more than one season.
In the finale, Ted hands over his role as manager of the women’s team, the Lady Greyhounds, to Alice Chilton, subsequently taking on the position of assistant manager alongside Beard. Meanwhile, Roy Kent accepts the head coaching job at Chelsea but remains with Richmond through the end of their season.
Hunt clarified that Ted’s decision is not a reflection of his capabilities. He explained to TVLine that Ted recognized Alice’s potential as a coach from the start and that the change allows him to spend more time with his son, Henry.

Hunt noted that Ted has observed Alice’s growth, stating that she was nearly ready when they first met and is now even more prepared. The finale emphasizes this arc, promoting her to the top position and symbolizing the transition. Reports suggest that the idea of an assistant manager character originated from Sudeikis early in the show’s development.
For Alice, played by Tanya Reynolds, this promotion caps off a season of consistent growth. The change signifies a new era for the Lady Greyhounds under fresh leadership.
Roy’s transition to Chelsea marks the end of one chapter while leaving the door open for another. He and Rebecca part amicably, and Roy departs Richmond with Keeley. Hunt mentioned that their storyline is just another beat in their journey and not a definitive exit.
He also stated that Roy’s job is less significant than his role in Keeley’s life, and there is no reason to believe he is gone for good. Hunt expressed curiosity about the potential for Roy and Keeley to become parents.
The finale also featured a poignant memorial for Mae at the Crown & Anchor, where Henry grapples with her passing. Ted chooses to be honest with Henry about his grandfather’s death instead of deflecting, and Keeley’s viral promo video fills Nelson Road for the Lady Greyhounds’ final match.
Rebecca’s ownership of the club faces challenges from Zelda’s hostile takeover, but Hugo sells his shares back to her. Mae’s will returns her stake to Rebecca, granting her 51%, and Matthijs proposes to Rebecca, who accepts. The closing montage includes Beard shaving his head and Ted delivering a long-awaited going-away gift.

Hunt explained that the returning cast from the first three seasons appeared at the end to signify a transitional moment. He described it as a passing of the torch between the show’s past and its present. A memorial title card for Anthony Head was also included, with Hunt calling him beloved by the entire cast.
The closing montage features Mae’s voice reciting a Mary Oliver poem, leaving the story with an open-ended feeling rather than a definitive conclusion.
As of now, nothing about a renewal has been confirmed. Hunt mentioned that the team has never been certain if there would be more beyond this, although the creative team has always hoped for more. For fans, the finale’s open-ended structure provides ample room for a return.
