‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Expected to Stream on Netflix This December
The biggest theatrical hits eventually find their way to streaming services, and fans eagerly speculate about which platform will host them and when. For a film that shattered box office records over the summer, this anticipation is particularly heightened. According to a widely circulated report, the answer may be closer than many anticipated.
Sony and Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ premiered exclusively in theaters on July 31 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. It opened with a staggering $360 million domestically, surpassing ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and achieved a remarkable $932 million worldwide debut. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film boasts a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore.
Currently, the focus is on the upcoming Netflix release of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ Box office tracker Global Box Office reported on X that the film is set to stream on Netflix in December as part of the company’s agreement with Sony. It is anticipated to become the most-streamed non-original film on the platform to date. However, neither Sony nor Netflix has confirmed a specific date.
SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY will stream on NETFLIX only in December, as part of the $7-8 BILLION deal the company has with Sony. It’s expected to be the most streamed Netflix’s non-original film of all time. Sony BTW also produced the most streamed Netflix’s original film (KPOP). https://t.co/JZgVV2xLLv

Fans don’t have to wait long to enjoy it at home. The film became available on premium video on demand on Tuesday, October 6, and can be rented for $24.99 or purchased for $29.99 on platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. A 4K Blu-ray Steelbook with variant cover art is scheduled for release on December 15, along with standard Blu-ray and DVD versions.
Additionally, a theatrical re-release featuring extended footage is in the works, according to Deadline. Sony has shown no urgency to remove the film from premium screens, which is understandable for a movie that continues to attract audiences.
The timeline for the Netflix release remains somewhat uncertain. Sony and Netflix established a multiyear agreement in January, making Netflix the exclusive “Pay-1” streaming destination for Sony’s feature films after their theatrical and home entertainment releases. Pay-1 refers to the first subscription-streaming window for a film.
Estimates regarding the release date vary. What’s On Netflix data cited by Men’s Journal suggests a Netflix debut on November 28, while Decider has indicated late 2026 or early 2027. Following its Netflix run, the film is expected to transition to Disney+ sometime next year.

This streaming arrangement is significant. Sony and Netflix expanded their Pay-1 deal into a global agreement reportedly valued at around $7 billion, as per Broadcast. This follows a previous deal from 2020 estimated to be worth about $3 billion, with full global availability on Netflix expected by early 2029.
Upcoming titles under this new agreement include ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,’ a live-action ‘The Legend of Zelda,’ and Sam Mendes’ four-part Beatles release. Notably, Sony is the only major Hollywood studio without its own streaming service, making the licensing revenue particularly crucial.

The tweet also highlights another Sony-produced Netflix hit. ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ was created by Sony Pictures Animation under the same Pay-1 agreement and became Netflix’s most-watched film ever. Netflix has since confirmed a sequel, with creators Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning.
The film was developed at Sony in 2021, coinciding with the signing of its Pay-1 output deal, during a time when theaters were still recovering from the pandemic. Sony reportedly made only about $20 million in profit from it, while the majority of the value flowed to Netflix. This history underscores the potential worth of a streaming window.
The rationale behind the record predictions is straightforward. A film this popular, finally accessible to subscribers on the world’s largest streaming service, could attract massive viewership. Netflix subscribers will be able to watch it at no additional cost, regardless of their subscription tier, once it becomes available.
Whether it will surpass other non-original titles remains uncertain, and the prediction is more of an expectation than a certainty. However, given the film’s box office success and Netflix’s extensive reach, impressive numbers seem likely. Fans will be eagerly watching to see if the release date falls in November, December, or later.
