Port Wenn has a unique way of drawing people back, no matter how determined they are to leave. For Dr. Martin Best, this pull has intensified as the season progresses. This week’s episode of ‘Best Medicine’ placed his ambitions, emotions, and the small town on a collision course.

The episode, titled ‘No Place Like Om’, aired on Tuesday, October 13, on FOX. It followed Martin as he attempted to take time off for the first time to attend a gala in Boston with his girlfriend, Eden, portrayed by Eliza Coupe. This day also marked the graduation of seniors at Port Wenn Day School, raising the stakes for Louisa, played by Abigail Spencer, in her inaugural graduation as principal.

Spoilers follow for the full episode and its conclusion.

Martin’s weekend plans quickly unraveled. Three older residents began exhibiting unusual symptoms after returning from a wellness retreat, including the school’s bandleader, which jeopardized graduation. Miss Ruth appeared to be overly caffeinated, Mary Lou was unexpectedly lactating, and Fred, the driver’s education teacher, was sweating excessively. Just when Martin thought he could leave, another issue arose.

Martin and Mark, played by Josh Segarra, visited the Happy Grove Retreat Center, which turned out to be a legitimate establishment rather than a cult. The center’s CEO noticed that Fred seemed unwell during their visit. While Mark connected with the gurus, Martin found himself in a mud bath.

The cause of the symptoms was more mundane than anticipated. Tim, a home health aide, had been mistakenly mixing up the seniors’ medications without realizing he was color blind and had sorted pills after dropping them.

The consequences were severe. Mary Lou’s symptoms stemmed from Fred’s anti-nausea pills, while Ruth’s arthritis medication caused her pancreatitis. Ruth’s lithium then sent Fred into renal failure, causing him to pass out. Fortunately, Martin quickly identified the mix-up, preventing a more dire situation.

When Fred needed calming, Martin attempted to guide him to visualize a happy place, but he struggled to do so himself. Louisa intervened, describing the docks, subtly highlighting where Martin’s true comfort lies. Critics noted that throughout the episode, he prioritized his patients over his own plans.

Interestingly, Eden did not appear in this episode. The gala remained a destination Martin continuously aimed for, yet the narrative kept pulling him back to Port Wenn. By the end, this contrast became significant.

Louisa became increasingly anxious about making graduation flawless, partly to prove herself as a first-time principal. She was also apprehensive about taking a pregnancy test to determine if her IVF treatment had succeeded. With Elaine and George by her side, she eventually took the test, which came back negative.

During graduation, she opted for an authentic speech about friendships and the importance of supporting one another instead of a polished one. She then surprised Mark with a diploma, recognizing him as the final graduate. He had missed his own commencement due to a high school prank, and teens rushed to provide him with a cap and gown. His mother, Sally, played by Clea Lewis, also removed her neck brace and tossed it with the caps.

George, played by Jason Veasey, contemplated retiring the lobster rolls at the Salty Breeze, leading his husband Greg, played by Stephen Spinella, to worry about George’s happiness in their marriage. George reassured him that there is nowhere else he wishes to be. He later reinstated lobster rolls on the menu to lift Louisa’s spirits.

In another storyline, Sarah, played by Annie Potts, rented out her spare room for graduation weekend. Her first guest was her ex, Eddie McCroy, who pretended to be a visiting father to spend time with her. He cooked her a steak and watched her favorite show with her, charming her friends.

The episode’s final scene is its emotional core. Martin waits at the train station for his ride to Boston, watching a livestream of Louisa’s graduation speech. A change occurs within him, and he ultimately decides not to board. Instead, he returns to Port Wenn to find Louisa.

This choice signifies a turning point, even if Martin does not fully acknowledge it. Louisa’s negative pregnancy test removes one barrier between them, and Martin forwent a hospital gala that could have been a step back toward his surgical career. Critics interpret this as a sign that he is choosing Louisa over Eden, with circumstances still needing to align with his feelings.

The series follows Martin as the town’s GP in Port Wenn, Maine, while he navigates his fear of blood, which he has now revealed. The season picks up five months after the first, with his relationships with Louisa and Eden still unresolved. ‘Best Medicine’ airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on FOX and streams the following day on Hulu.
