Divorce dramas often captivate audiences with their emotional turmoil, but ‘War’ takes a unique approach by framing a breakup as a courtroom battleground. Created by George Kay and featuring Dominic West and Sienna Miller, the series showcases a tech entrepreneur and a film star embroiled in a fierce legal battle over their separation. Following a chaotic premiere, the show sharpens its focus in this latest episode.

The second episode, titled ‘No More Nasty Surprises’, premiered Thursday on HBO and HBO Max in the US, and on Friday on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK. Here’s a breakdown of the key events and the implications of the ending.

The first episode concluded with Morgan, portrayed by West, engaging in a one-night stand with a stranger who was actually a honey trap orchestrated by his wife, Carla. He subsequently served her divorce papers at her film premiere, giving his side an initial advantage. This means Carla’s firm, Taylor & Byrne, enters the next phase of the case at a disadvantage.

The legal battle pits Taylor & Byrne against Cathcarts & Sons, featuring Phoebe Fox as Serena, James McArdle as Nicholas, and Archie Renaux as young lawyer Johnny Warren. A second season has already been confirmed, which will transition to a defamation case with a new cast.

This episode focuses on a mediation session that primarily serves as a fact-finding mission. The mediator navigates between the two parties, relaying increasingly aggressive offers. Morgan starts with a proposal of £17 million upfront, half of his assets excluding one property, along with monthly payments until his retirement.

Carla responds with laughter, countering with a demand for £100 million, half of everything including that property, and higher payments extending until she reaches retirement age 15 years later. Morgan then makes a critical error by admitting that his company’s value has significantly increased since the prenup was established, providing Carla’s lawyers with a point to challenge the agreement.

Johnny joins Taylor & Byrne, but neither Nicholas nor Serena is aware that he is working for both sides. He discovers more about Flora, the woman who tested Morgan’s fidelity in the premiere, and observes as Serena pressures her to sign a nondisclosure agreement, claiming it’s for her own protection.

Flora’s mother then demands $20,000 before her daughter will sign. Serena and Carla approve the payment, and Johnny ensures it is routed in a way that cannot be traced back to the firm. Flora signs the agreement, and it seems like everything is under control.

However, the situation is more complicated. Cathcarts obtains a recording of Johnny informing Serena that the payment was made and the NDA signed as instructed. This provides Morgan’s side with evidence of misconduct from the opposing firm, potentially shifting the case’s momentum as it moves toward arbitration.

The episode concludes on a quieter yet significant note. Flora messages Morgan expressing her desire to meet. It remains uncertain whether this invitation is genuine or strategic, and one recap suggests that the meeting could pose risks for Morgan in terms of arbitration, although he is likely to accept.

Critics have noted that the series makes divorce entertaining, even amid the characters’ struggles. Some reviews are less sympathetic toward Carla, as her rejection of £17 million seems ungracious given her wealth, while Morgan’s side is often more humorous due to his blunders. Both sides present challenges for viewers to root for, adding to the show’s allure.

The ensemble cast also excels, with characters like Smallwood, David, and Beatrice delivering sharp dialogue and dramatic moments. One scene even features Beatrice snubbing Serena, keeping the dialogue-rich legal drama engaging.

The first season consists of 8 episodes released weekly, ensuring plenty of conflict remains. The next episode, ‘Chip Off the Old Block’, is set to air in the US on Oct. 15. Key questions linger: Will Johnny’s dual role come back to haunt him, and will Morgan’s meeting with Flora create the very surprise that the title warns against?
