Few video game franchises boast a fan base as passionate as ‘Street Fighter’, and few cities embrace a movie campaign quite like Mexico City. With the highly anticipated live-action film just days away from its theatrical release, the cast has been touring to connect with fans. The latest stop provided an exciting opportunity for fans in the Mexican capital to meet some of the stars in person.

Set in 1993, the film follows estranged fighters Ryu and Ken Masters, who reunite when Chun-Li recruits them for the upcoming World Warrior Tournament. However, a deeper conspiracy threatens the competition, forcing the former friends to confront their pasts. Directed by Kitao Sakurai, the film features Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo, and Jason Momoa.

Among the cast members present, one appearance truly stood out. Callina Liang, who portrays Chun-Li, graced the ‘Street Fighter’ backdrop in a dramatic ruffled mini dress featuring a sculpted, wing-like collar and a sheer, textured bodice. She completed her look with a high bun and black strappy heels.

The dress appeared to transform under the lights, showcasing a sheer black design in some shots and a shimmering metallic blue in others. This unique outfit, with its shifting shades, added to the overall drama. Set against the fiery red and orange branding of the film, her look made a striking impression.

The fan gathering took place on Thursday, Oct. 8, at Cinépolis Universidad in Mexico City, allowing fans to meet part of the film’s talent. Liang was joined by Koji, Centineo, Momoa, Cody Rhodes, and director Sakurai. Local outlets hosted ticket giveaways leading up to the event, offering a double pass as the prize.

Mexico is part of a broader promotional tour, which reportedly includes stops in New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Amsterdam, and London. So far, Mexico is the only Spanish-speaking country in Latin America confirmed on the itinerary, making this stop particularly significant for local fans.

Sakurai, known for ‘Bad Trip’, took over directing duties after Danny and Michael Philippou departed from the project. This change added a layer of intrigue around the film, and the cast’s public appearances have become a way for fans to gauge the atmosphere. Thus far, the energy at the events has appeared celebratory rather than cautious.

Liang, a Canadian actress, secured the role of Chun-Li following earlier work in smaller films and television. Her breakout performance came in Steven Soderbergh’s film ‘Presence’, which premiered at Sundance in 2024. She has also appeared in the thriller ‘Bad Genius’ and has a recurring role on Apple TV+’s ‘Foundation’.

Her casting was reported by Deadline, with Legendary Pictures behind the decision. One outlet noted that she visually fits the role, which is a significant compliment for a character who has been part of the franchise since ‘Street Fighter II’.

Liang is surrounded by one of the most eclectic ensembles in recent memory. Koji plays Ryu, Centineo plays Ken, Rhodes plays Guile, and Momoa plays Blanka. The cast also includes Orville Peck as Vega, 50 Cent as Balrog, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Roman Reigns as Akuma, and Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki.

This diverse cast includes wrestlers, rappers, and comedians, which aligns perfectly with a franchise built on colorful fighters. It also suggests that the movie plans to emphasize fan service as much as storytelling, featuring plenty of recognizable faces for audiences to spot.

The film is produced by Legendary Entertainment and Paramount Pictures, with Capcom as a co-producer. It opens in Mexico on Oct. 15, a day before its U.S. release on Oct. 16, which explains the cast’s active presence in the country this week.

For Liang, the premiere season marks a significant milestone as she transitions from indie darling to leading a blockbuster franchise. If the fan event is any indication, she is more than ready for the spotlight, and her fashion choices are certainly keeping pace.
