‘Matchbox: The Movie‘ is set to premiere on Apple TV on October 9, marking another effort to adapt a beloved Mattel toy into a feature film. The brand has its roots in 1953 when an inventor designed a car small enough to fit in a matchbox for his daughter to take to school. This charming backstory raises expectations for a film with heart, but what unfolds is a 126-minute spy comedy featuring John Cena.

Cena stars as Sean, a former soldier turned undercover CIA agent who returns to his small hometown after years away, pulling his childhood friends into a global chase. Directed by Sam Hargrave, known for his work on the ‘Extraction’ films, the movie is based on a script by David Coggeshall. As Hollywood continues its quest for the next big toy-inspired hit like ‘Barbie’, this film bypassed theaters altogether.

One of the film’s strengths is its tangible feel. Hargrave utilizes real locations, and the car chases and fight scenes possess a weight that often eludes digital effects. Cena performs some of his own stunts, which is evident as the camera captures the action without hiding the performers.

However, the toy itself becomes a weak point. The Matchbox cars are meant to embody the film’s spirit, yet they often feel like a mere logo attached to a standard chase narrative. Characters repeatedly claim that a Matchbox car is more than just a car, but the film fails to substantiate that assertion. Flashbacks to childhood play suggest potential, but the film does not fully realize that spark.

The script also falters. Each plot twist arrives predictably, the stakes remain unclear, and the heartfelt speeches about friendship come too early, lacking the narrative foundation to support them. The film resembles a lesser ‘Fast & Furious’ sequel—visually appealing yet ultimately forgettable.

Fortunately, the cast elevates the material. Sam Richardson shines as the comic relief, while Jessica Biel brings energy as Aimee. Teyonah Parris and Arturo Castro also contribute memorable moments. Danai Gurira and Corey Stoll appear in smaller roles, but neither is given much to work with.

Cena’s performance is an intriguing aspect. He is charming and dedicated, yet his portrayal of Sean is so restrained that his trademark goofy charisma seldom emerges. The film might have benefitted from allowing him to be more expressive.

In the end, I left the film mildly entertained but not emotionally engaged. The practical stunts and a humorous supporting cast prevent it from being a total miss, but the thin connection to the toy and the formulaic script keep it from crossing the finish line successfully. I rate it 5 out of 10.
