Emma Stone doesn’t make many red carpet appearances these days, so when she does, it’s for a project close to her heart. This time, she graced the New York Film Festival premiere of ‘The Debut’, a film she produced, making her red carpet moment as much about the film as it was about fashion.

Stone’s increasing focus on behind-the-camera work is evident, with ‘The Debut’ being a prime example. Produced by her company, Fruit Tree, the film boasts a talented ensemble and has already made a strong impression during its festival run. The premiere allowed her to celebrate with the cast and filmmakers.

The premiere took place on Wednesday evening, Oct. 7, at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, as part of the festival’s Spotlight Gala lineup. Photos from the event show Stone laughing and waving to the crowd outside, with a tan coat draped over her arm and a small clutch in hand. Her hair cascaded in loose waves, and her radiant smile indicated her enjoyment of the evening.

W Magazine highlighted that this was her first formal red carpet appearance since the SAG Awards in March, which explains the significant attention the evening received and why images circulated rapidly online.

Stone wore a custom Louis Vuitton dress, inspired by a piece from the label’s Spring 2027 runway show in Paris, which she attended just a day prior. The slip-style gown featured an empire waistline, a gray satin section draped across the neckline, and a skirt with a subtle sheer finish. She completed her look with pale strappy heels.

The original runway version showcased a vibrant yellow underlay and embellished silver straps, while Stone’s custom design opted for a more muted, gray-toned palette. The result was both elegant and understated, maintaining the flowing silhouette. Fashion Times reported that she sat front row at the Paris show on Tuesday, Oct. 6, before heading to New York for the premiere.

‘The Debut’ is written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg, who also stars and penned its original songs. The film follows Mona Friedman, a shy housewife portrayed by Julianne Moore, who lands a small role in a community theater production of an original musical. As she immerses herself in her role, she clashes with the show’s overbearing director, played by Paul Giamatti.

The cast includes Halle Bailey, Bernadette Peters, Cara Buono, Havana Rose Liu, Colton Ryan, and Bonnie Milligan, among others. Stone shares producer credits with Eisenberg, Dave McCary, and Ali Herting, while Topic Studios serves as executive producer and A24 handles distribution.

The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and is currently in the main competition at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. It is also featured in the Spotlight Gala section of the New York Film Festival and will close the BFI London Film Festival on Oct. 18 as its UK premiere. This busy autumn marks just the beginning for a film that has only recently started connecting with audiences.

Early reviews have been encouraging, with Rotten Tomatoes currently showing a 91% Tomatometer score based on 55 reviews. While this score may fluctuate as more reviews come in, it’s a promising start for a musical comedy exploring the thrills and absurdities of community theater.

A24 is set to release ‘The Debut’ in limited theaters on Dec. 11, followed by a wider release on Christmas Day. In the UK, Lionsgate will premiere it on Jan. 15, 2027. The film is rated R and has a runtime of approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.

For Stone, the film’s rollout serves as a reminder of her expanded role in the industry. She is recognized not just as a star but as a champion of this project, and the pride she displayed on the carpet was unmistakable.
