Recently, Maya Boyd was primarily known to Broadway audiences and her TikTok followers. Now, at just 23 years old, she has become one of the most talked-about young actresses in Hollywood, thanks to her role that carries decades of fan anticipation.

This shift occurred on August 14, when Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced the cast of the upcoming ‘X-Men’ film at D23 in Anaheim, California. Boyd was revealed as Ororo Munroe, famously known as Storm, marking her feature film debut. This announcement catapulted her into the spotlight, making her one of the most searched names in Hollywood almost overnight.

These two looks showcase her versatility, ranging from glamorous evening wear to relaxed street style. They also highlight that Boyd was already comfortable on social media long before Marvel came calling, having amassed over 450,000 followers on TikTok through her skits, family videos, and singing clips.

Boyd made her Broadway debut in 2023 in ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ while still a senior completing her musical theatre degree at the University of Michigan. She later took on the title role in ‘& Juliet’, performing from April 2024 to June 2025, and has also appeared in ‘Joe Turner’s Come and Gone’.

Marvel’s decision to cast a stage performer for a significant role isn’t unprecedented. In July, the studio cast David Jonsson, known for his theater background and role in ‘Industry’, as Black Panther. These two selections indicate that Marvel is intentionally seeking talent beyond traditional movie stars.

This casting is also a rare risk on a relatively unknown talent for a beloved lead role. Some fans have drawn parallels to Hugh Jackman, who was also a lesser-known actor when he was cast as Wolverine in 2000. One outlet noted that Boyd has the most to prove among the newly announced cast, as she steps onto the big screen for the first time.

Boyd is the third actress to portray Storm on screen. Halle Berry first introduced the character in 2000’s ‘X-Men’, while Alexandra Shipp played a younger version in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ and ‘Dark Phoenix’. Berry has confirmed she will not return as Storm for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.

Fans have celebrated Boyd’s casting, having long advocated for Marvel to select a dark-skinned Black actress for Storm, reflecting the character’s African heritage. Social media reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with some users comparing her journey from stage to screen to that of Denzel Washington and Viola Davis.

Following the announcement, Boyd playfully updated her Instagram bio with lightning bolt emojis, a small yet meaningful gesture that demonstrated her awareness of the role’s significance to fans.

She will star alongside Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Christopher Abbott as Professor X. Adam Driver is set to portray the villain Mr. Sinister. The untitled film is slated for release in theaters on May 5, 2028.

Boyd is also making waves in the fashion industry. On October 6, she attended the Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2027 show at the Louvre during Paris Fashion Week, where celebrities like Zendaya, Emma Stone, BLACKPINK’s Lisa, and Sophie Turner were present. Her polished look from the evening received acclaim from both Marvel fans and fashion enthusiasts.

With the film’s release still a while away, social media will be the primary platform for fans to catch glimpses of the new Storm for now. Each new post heightens the anticipation, and the spotlight on Boyd is only set to shine brighter.
