Comic con weekends are typically filled with panels, signings, and nostalgia, but occasionally, an unexpected storyline emerges. This year, Tom Welling’s Instagram story became that unexpected highlight.

The actor was in New York for one of the most eagerly awaited reunions, celebrating a show that shaped a generation of superhero television. However, the buzz began in a hotel room rather than on stage.

Welling was in town for a ‘Smallville’ cast reunion at New York Comic Con, perfectly timed ahead of the series’ 25th anniversary on October 16. The show debuted on The WB, ran for 10 seasons, and concluded on The CW in 2011, chronicling Clark Kent’s journey before he became Superman.

The convention panel, titled ‘The Road to Superman: 25 Years of Smallville’, took place at the Javits Center on October 10. It featured Welling alongside Michael Rosenbaum, Kristin Kreuk, Erica Durance, and producer Julie Snyder.

The incident began a day earlier. On Friday, the 49-year-old actor shared a photo of his hotel room view on his Instagram Stories, captioned “Hello, NYCC,” as a friendly greeting to the convention.

However, the skyline wasn’t the only thing visible in the frame. His reflection in the hotel window revealed that he wasn’t fully dressed.

The story reportedly remained live for at least 10 hours before being deleted. By that time, screenshots had circulated widely on social media, and the image garnered significant views.

Online reactions were quick and a bit cheeky. One fan humorously suggested that Welling might need a PR agent, questioning how he overlooked the reflection before posting.

Others embraced the Clark Kent comparisons, with one outlet noting that it wasn’t very Clark Kent-like of him. The moment cleverly tied into the show’s legacy of mild-mannered secrets and accidental reveals.

Welling himself appeared unfazed at the convention. He engaged with his former castmates on stage and later shared a video of himself signing photos and comics from the show, inviting fans to come meet him.

On Saturday, Welling entertained fans with a behind-the-scenes story. He recounted how his co-star John Glover once entered his makeup trailer with a big smile, holding a fan-made nude image of Welling and asking if it was real. Welling humorously said he signed it for him.

The anecdote resonated differently given the weekend’s viral moment, and the audience clearly enjoyed the timing. Rosenbaum also shared a clip from the panel on his Instagram, showcasing the cast smiling while cheering fans filled the room behind them.

For longtime fans, the reunion was the real highlight. Seeing Clark, Lex, Lana, and Lois together again reminded everyone of the series’ enduring impact.

The anniversary celebration continues beyond the Javits Center. The annual Salute to Smallville convention in Nashville will commemorate the 25th anniversary in November, featuring creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar among the guests.

This event is expected to reunite many cast members once again. With the convention circuit and the anniversary itself, the celebration is set to extend well beyond just one weekend.

If there’s a lesson here, it’s a simple one: always check the window before posting. Hotel glass can serve as an unexpectedly good mirror, especially with a sunset skyline.

Nevertheless, the incident hasn’t dampened the excitement surrounding the reunion. If anything, it kept the cast of ‘Smallville’ trending for several more days, and fans are eager to keep the conversation going.
