Being appointed as the director of a federal agency is expected to transform how one operates. For Tony DiNozzo, however, it seems to have changed very little. Following a surprising promotion in the premiere, ‘NCIS‘ utilized its latest episode to explore the dynamics of a field agent transitioning into the corner office.

The episode, titled ‘Clean Slate’, aired on Tuesday, October 13, on CBS and is available for streaming on Paramount+. This marks the first episode focused on Michael Weatherly’s Tony in his new role as director, a position he assumed after the passing of Leon Vance and the brief leadership of Gabriel LaRoche. The official synopsis hints at a murder stemming from a neighborhood dinner party where every guest is hiding something.

Spoilers follow for the entire episode and its conclusion.

The episode kicks off with Tony outlining his fresh approach to the team. He orchestrates a fake biohazard alarm to gather everyone together, then informs his agents that their task is to solve cases while his responsibility is to ensure nothing obstructs their progress. It’s a bold declaration, but it doesn’t last long.

As the investigation unfolds, Tony finds it difficult to remain detached. He joins the team in questioning suspects, becoming so involved that it starts to make everyone uneasy. Eventually, the team requests McGee to have a word with the new director.

The case begins at a dinner party hosted by a couple, Linda and Greg, with Naval Intelligence officer Mallory among the attendees. Linda steps away to fetch more wine, and upon her return, she discovers her husband and the guests have been rendered unconscious by gas. Armed intruders search the house but leave empty-handed.

Later, Linda reports Greg missing, and the team discovers his body in his vehicle. Initially, she suspects a heart attack, but it is revealed that he was poisoned. Kasie uncovers that the house’s vacuum cleaner contained camera-equipped smart devices, linking the case to the CIA.

Parker’s discussion with CIA agent Russell Cross shifts the investigation’s trajectory. It turns out Greg was involved in a scheme with long-term deep-cover operatives, and the CIA had been monitoring him. The agency acknowledges that they gassed the dinner guests but denies any involvement in his death.

Footage from a dog feeder ultimately reveals that Linda was responsible for her husband’s death. She was complicit in the operation, and their marriage served as a facade. Fearing that a medication Greg was taking could expose the scheme, Linda decided to eliminate him for what she perceived as the greater good.

With the conspiracy unveiled, the only task left is to apprehend Linda. However, Tony intervenes, believing that both Linda and the operation are part of a larger issue, and that arresting her would alert those behind it.

Tony informs the team that he senses something significant is on the horizon, something that has many intelligent individuals concerned. He expresses his reluctance to let her go, but assures them that they will eventually catch her. In essence, the case remains unresolved, and Linda becomes bait for a more substantial target, a storyline likely to unfold throughout the season.

After the case wraps up, McGee confronts Tony about his conduct. Tony admits he is behaving more like an agent than a director. He shares his concern that the job could drain a person’s spirit, and that capturing criminals is how he copes and stays grounded.

He then shifts the focus to McGee, revealing that he was not overlooked for the director’s position. The Secretary of the Navy has other plans and wants McGee to succeed her when she retires. This revelation is significant and alters McGee’s role within the franchise.

The episode also delves into Tony’s life outside of work. He is currently staying on Jimmy’s couch and prefers to keep the thermostat quite low. Ziva, who remains close by, checks in with calls, including one to Jessica to ensure Tony adheres to his diet, keeping her presence felt even in her absence.

Critics have noted that the series is allowing the storyline to develop organically while hinting that Ziva will eventually need to make an appearance. Tony’s tendency to become overly involved raises questions about how the rest of the team, including Nick and Jessica, will adjust. For now, the camaraderie between Tony and McGee has resumed right where it left off.

‘NCIS’ airs on Tuesdays on CBS at 8/9c. With a deep-cover spy ring still at large, a killer allowed to walk free, and McGee’s future uncertain, the season is packed with intriguing threads. Tony may hold the title of director, but he clearly intends to remain active in the field.
