Gemma Chan Expresses Desire to Return as Astrid in the ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ HBO Series
Few supporting characters from a rom-com have remained in fans’ minds as long as Astrid Leong-Teo. Elegant, composed, and quietly heartbroken, she was the character many viewers wished to see more of long after the credits rolled. Now, the actress who portrayed her is addressing the question that has been on every fan’s mind.
Gemma Chan has shared her thoughts on whether she will reprise her role in the upcoming ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ series on HBO. Speaking at the BFI London Film Festival, she expressed her love for the franchise and the people involved, noting that Astrid holds a special place in her heart. While she hopes to return, she could not provide further details at this time.
This measured response aligns with the current situation. HBO announced the series just days ago, and although several original stars are confirmed, Chan is not yet among them. Her comment is the closest indication that the door may still be ajar for her return.
Gemma Chan on whether or not she’s returning for the ‘CRAZY RICH ASIANS’ HBO series:
“I love ‘CRAZY RICH ASIANS,’ I love the people involved. Astrid has such a special place in my heart so I hope so. I can’t say any more than that for now.” https://t.co/c69depXekN— Film Updates (@FilmUpdates) October 13, 2026
HBO has ordered an 8-episode, one-hour drama that will continue the story after the events of the 2018 film. Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Ronny Chieng are confirmed as series regulars, reprising their roles as Rachel Chu, Nick Young, and Eddie Cheng. Michelle Yeoh will also return as Nick’s formidable mother, Eleanor.
Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original screenplay, will adapt the story for television as showrunner and executive producer, with Jon M. Chu also attached. Production is set to begin in 2027, although HBO has yet to announce a premiere date, episode schedule, or a complete cast list. Casey Bloys, the network’s chief content officer, referred to the returning stars as global superstars and mentioned that fans of the film and novels are eager for more.
Astrid’s absence from the initial announcement has not gone unnoticed. In the film, she was Nick’s cousin, a fashion icon and socialite whose marriage to Michael fell apart after she discovered his infidelity. The story left her newly single and hinted at a potential future with Charlie Wu, played by Harry Shum Jr.
That narrative thread was always meant to continue. Chu mentioned after the film that a sequel would center on Astrid and Charlie, and scenes featuring them were filmed for the first movie but ultimately cut for narrative reasons. A short mid-credits scene between the two remained in the theatrical release.

Chan is not the only familiar face whose status remains uncertain. Awkwafina, who portrayed Rachel’s friend Peik Lin, has also not been confirmed. Observers have noted that the series might delve deeper into Astrid and Charlie’s story, recast the roles, or shift focus to the next chapter for Rachel and Nick.
Currently, HBO has provided little information beyond the main cast. This leaves the possibility open for further announcements as the project progresses toward production. Chan’s remarks suggest that discussions may still be ongoing.

When ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ debuted in 2018, it made history as the first film from a major Hollywood studio featuring an all-Asian cast in a long time, becoming a box office success. It was also a pivotal moment for Asian representation on screen. The decision to adapt it into a series, with an expanded narrative drawn from Kevin Kwan’s novels, indicates that audiences are still eager to immerse themselves in that world.
Lim stated that the series offers creators the opportunity to explore the characters and settings of the books in greater depth, and that it is the sequel fans have been waiting for. Telling the story over eight episodes allows for more development of characters like Astrid, whose journey was only partially explored in the film. This makes her potential return even more significant.
There are still more questions than answers. Cast announcements, a premiere date, and plot details will likely emerge as production approaches, and each will be closely scrutinized by fans. In the meantime, even a hopeful statement from Chan is enough to ignite excitement.
Whether Astrid returns or not, the new series is already shaping up to be a major event for fans of the original. The glamour, family drama, and culinary delights are all expected to be central to the adaptation. And if Chan has her way, one of its most elegant characters will be part of it.
