‘VisionQuest’ Hides a ‘Countdown to Doom’ in Ultron’s Room Is This Marvel’s First ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Tease
Marvel enthusiasts are always on the lookout for hidden gems, and ‘VisionQuest‘ has certainly provided ample opportunities for fans to keep their remotes close. The series is filled with intricate details, from coded messages to subtle nods that reward attentive viewers. The most recent discovery might just be the most exciting one yet.
This series serves as the concluding chapter of the trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued with ‘Agatha All Along.’ It follows Paul Bettany’s White Vision as he seeks purpose following the events of the first series, while his mind hosts the AI personalities of Tony Stark’s past. James Spader reprises his role as Ultron, who has been integrated into Vision’s Mind Space.
A keen-eyed fan has sparked a full-scale Easter egg hunt with a recent observation. Episode 2 of ‘VisionQuest’ features a hidden “Countdown to Doom” label in Ultron’s room, cleverly hinting at a connection to Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom and the forthcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’

This reference is cleverly hidden in Ultron’s upstairs apartment within Vision’s Mind Space. During the scene, the AI Avengers analyze data about Todd Stashwick’s Paladin on a series of screens. A close-up shot reveals what appears to be a DVD or CD case labeled “Countdown to Doom.”
It’s a subtle detail that could easily be overlooked on a first viewing, but fans quickly caught on. Many viewers interpret this as a hint towards the MCU’s progression toward ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which is set to premiere in theaters on December 18. This film features Downey as Victor von Doom, the central antagonist in the next major Marvel saga.
The label might hold multiple interpretations. Much of the footage displayed on Ultron’s various screens depicts war and human conflict, suggesting that “Countdown to Doom” could signify impending doom for humanity itself due to its own actions. This interpretation aligns with Ultron’s longstanding perspective on the world.
Another, more playful theory suggests that Marvel Studios has been streaming a countdown on YouTube for ‘Doomsday‘ since January, and Ultron’s mysterious recording could be a version of that very stream. This would serve as a clever nod to fans who have been tracking the days.

Ultron’s loft is described as a modern space situated high above the bizarre, nightmarish mansion that comprises the rest of Vision’s mind. He has been confined there since his defeat and has access to the internet. According to the series’ lore, he spends his time painting, which has provided him with a unique perspective on humanity compared to Vision.
This makes his space an ideal location for Easter eggs. Given Ultron’s character, a label about doom feels entirely fitting. Showrunner Terry Matalas has indicated that the relationship between Vision and Ultron is central to the series.

The second episode, “Theseus,” is significant for the show. It references the Ship of Theseus debate from the ‘WandaVision’ finale and concludes with a tragic twist as J.A.R.V.I.S. is lost, nearly two decades after the character’s debut in ‘Iron Man.’ Ultron even suggests a noble sacrifice as the AIs prepare to glitch out.
When viewed through this lens, the “Countdown to Doom” detail takes on even greater significance. Ultron is portrayed as a cunning figure who may be manipulating events from behind the scenes. Some fans are already speculating whether he is the secret antagonist of the series.
He used to be different.

Currently, there is no official confirmation that the series directly leads into ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Bettany is also not included in the official cast announcements for the film, and Marvel has kept many appearances under wraps. Some fans are hopeful that the finale will feature a post-credits scene linking Ultron to Doctor Doom, but that remains speculative.
What is evident is that Marvel enjoys rewarding viewers who pay close attention. The remaining episodes will be released in pairs, with episodes 3 and 4 on October 20, episodes 5 and 6 on October 27, episode 7 on November 3, and the finale on November 10. Fans will undoubtedly be scrutinizing every scene in Ultron’s apartment from this point forward.
