The filmmaking of period dramas has undergone significant artistic transformation, moving away from rigid drawing-room conventions to embrace a more vibrant, windswept realism. Few authors inspire such reinvention as Jane Austen, whose beloved narratives continue to engage contemporary viewers. As audiences explore the filming locations for ‘Sense and Sensibility’ 2026, they will find that the physical settings reflect the story’s emotional complexities.

Director Ang Lee brought Austen’s iconic romance to life in 1995 with an Oscar-winning screenplay by Emma Thompson. Now, three decades later, Focus Features and Working Title aim to reimagine the Dashwood sisters through a raw aesthetic. The creative team chose to film at authentic English heritage sites, avoiding polished studio backlots to infuse history into every scene.

Excitement in the industry grew when Variety confirmed that Daisy Edgar-Jones would star in the period romance under the direction of Georgia Oakley. The filmmaker committed to shooting on 35mm film throughout the British countryside. Screenwriter Diana Reid emphasized the importance of capturing environmental tension, admitting, “my reading of the book was certainly that it’s quite a dark book about what social constraints do to young women and the kind of dismal options that society has for them.”

The production spanned eight counties across England to depict the family’s transition from comfort to vulnerability. Instead of relying on familiar estates, the location team dedicated months to uncovering previously unfilmed architectural gems. This resulted in a sweeping geographical canvas that grounds the Regency narrative in real, weathered landscapes.

The story begins at Norland Park, the grand estate where Elinor and Marianne face eviction following their father’s unexpected death. For this ancestral property, the production secured Kingston Russell House, a private 17th-century manor in West Dorset that had never been featured in a film, providing a fresh backdrop for Austen’s tale.

The location scouts discovered this hidden estate by chance while cycling through Dorset during a day off. Its expansive grounds and weathered stonework created an authentic atmosphere that felt lived-in rather than staged. Nearby, at Parnham Park in Beaminster, the crew filmed reflective moments of Elinor skipping stones across the lake.

As the disinherited Dashwoods seek refuge, they find shelter in Barton Cottage amidst the rugged beauty of Devon. The filmmakers established their primary base within Dartmoor National Park, utilizing the historic Ditsworthy Warren House near Princetown. Originally constructed in the 16th century for a warren keeper, this stone dwelling had previously appeared in Steven Spielberg’s 2011 drama ‘War Horse’.

Transforming the isolated structure into a livable cottage required 10 days of restoration, including the installation of period windows and landscaping. The crew faced challenging conditions across Dartmoor, dealing with thick mud, dense fog, and roaming wild ponies. The dramatic granite tors and desolate moors provided a stark contrast to the manners of the landed gentry.

The production also ventured to the South Devon coastline, capturing key seaside exchanges along Mothecombe Beach on the Flete Estate, which coincidentally hosted scenes for the 1995 adaptation decades earlier. The sharp cliffs and crashing waves added a sense of danger to Marianne’s emotional awakening.

Sir John Middleton welcomes the Dashwoods to his expansive estate at Barton Park, filmed at Broughton Castle in Oxfordshire. Dating back to 1306, the moated castle offered ornate interiors for Sir John’s dining rooms, while its grounds served as the backdrop for the duel sequence. This landmark has also been featured in classics like ‘Shakespeare in Love’.

For the lively country dance, the crew traveled to Sevenoaks in Kent to film inside the 14th-century Baron’s Hall at Penshurst Place. This spirited sequence brought together 140 costumed supporting artists and eight dogs to create an authentic community celebration. The vibrant rhythm highlights the contrast between rural warmth and aristocratic rigidity.

As the narrative shifts to the capital, London street scenes were filmed around Lincoln’s Inn Fields and Horse Guards Parade. The interior of Mrs. Jennings’ elegant Portman Square residence was captured at Rainham Hall in East London, showcasing intact Georgian paneling that effortlessly transported viewers to the era.

Oakley discussed the balance between historic architecture and naturalism on the ScreenUK Podcast, detailing the extensive effort required to create a “naturalistic, 35mm world” that allowed the Dashwood sisters to feel genuinely alive. By selecting authentic landmarks across Devon, Dorset, Oxfordshire, and London, the film transforms its physical landscape into a vital character. The interplay between grand estates and untamed wilderness ultimately enriches the poignant romance at the heart of Austen’s masterpiece.
