Jacob Tremblay Ready to Suit Up as Robin in James Gunn’s ‘The Brave and the Bold’
The Boy Wonder has a rich and intricate history on screen. Robin has been featured in both live-action and animated formats for decades, but he has been notably absent from the big screen for several years. This gap is set to be filled by James Gunn’s DC Universe.
The upcoming film is ‘The Brave and the Bold’, which marks the DCU’s first Batman movie. It will focus on Bruce Wayne and his biological son, Damian Wayne, who takes on the mantle of Robin. Gunn has expressed that Damian is his favorite Robin, describing him as a little assassin that Batman attempts to guide, and the film aims to introduce the Bat-Family into the new continuity.
Jacob Tremblay, who has previously voiced the character in animated form, has expressed his eagerness to take on the role in live-action. In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, he stated, “It’d be a privilege to play that role,” and mentioned that he would jump at the opportunity, noting that the stunts would be incredible.
Tremblay voiced Damian Wayne in the animated series ‘Harley Quinn’, making him one of the many actors who have portrayed Robin in various forms. During his conversation with ScreenRant’s Tatiana Hullender about ‘Wildwood’, he was directly asked if he would be interested in playing the character in the DCU.
His response was quick and lighthearted. He joked about his own creativity before affirming his willingness to take on the role, suggesting that his experience with the character has left a lasting impression.
Tremblay is no stranger to fan speculation. He has appeared on fan casting lists for Damian, with his performances in films like ‘Room’, ‘Wonder’, and ‘Before I Wake’ cited as evidence of his versatility, alongside his voice work in ‘Harley Quinn’.
Such attention is common for a role of this magnitude. Since the film’s announcement, fans have suggested various names for both Batman and Robin, including Jensen Ackles and Alan Ritchson, among a host of young actors, although nothing has been officially confirmed.
Currently, there are no concrete updates. No actor has been cast as Batman, and a release date remains unannounced. Gunn has indicated that many aspects of the story, including Bruce’s parentage, are still being finalized. Andy Muschietti, the director of ‘The Flash’, is attached to direct, with Christina Hodson reported as the writer.
Muschietti has also mentioned that the project has been slightly delayed and is not in active development at the moment, as he focuses on a science fiction film he wishes to direct. Typically, casting will only commence once a screenplay is finalized.
The timing of Tremblay’s comments is noteworthy, especially as the DCU is about to delve into Gotham with its horror film ‘Clayface’, set to hit theaters on October 23. This film does not feature Batman and lacks a post-credits scene, so fans eager for hints about the Caped Crusader will have to be patient.
This leaves ‘The Brave and the Bold’ as the most anticipated project on the horizon. Gunn has mentioned that he has received interest from numerous high-profile actors wanting to portray Batman, indicating that the studio will have a wealth of options when the time comes.
Introducing Robin to the DCU is a significant creative decision. The character has long been associated with the campy tone of the 1990s films, and studios have largely shied away from him. A version grounded in Grant Morrison’s comics presents a much different perspective.
The story of Damian is darker and more character-driven, revolving around a father and son who struggle to understand one another. If the film adheres closely to this concept, it could provide the DCU with a fresh interpretation of a character that has often been misrepresented.
For now, Tremblay’s enthusiasm remains just that—a willingness to take on the role if given the chance. However, it highlights the significant interest in the character and how closely fans are monitoring the casting developments.
Until the studio provides more information, the question of who will don the cape and mask remains wide open.
