‘Mass Effect’ TV Series Still in Development at Amazon After BioWare Closure
For ‘Mass Effect’ fans, this week has been particularly tough. On Wednesday, October 21, Electronic Arts announced the closure of BioWare, the studio responsible for ‘Mass Effect’ and ‘Dragon Age’, along with the cancellation of the next game in the series, which was still in early development.
This shutdown is part of a broader restructuring at EA that will eliminate around 400 jobs, including about 50 at BioWare. This leaves the beloved franchise without a game in development for the first time in years. A leaked trailer for the cancelled project, reportedly named ‘Mass Effect: Universe’, only heightened the sense of loss.
However, there is a silver lining. According to an exclusive report from IGN, sources within Prime Video have confirmed that the ‘Mass Effect’ television series is still in development at Amazon MGM Studios, making it the franchise’s only active project at this time.
The creative team for the series appears to be intact. As of August 2025, Doug Jung, known for ‘Mindhunter’ and ‘Star Trek Beyond’, is serving as showrunner, with Daniel Casey, who wrote ‘Fast & Furious 9’, handling the scripts. Karim Zreik, an executive producer on ‘Jessica Jones’, is producing through Cedar Tree Productions, alongside former Marvel Studios producer Ari Arad and Mike Gamble, who oversaw ‘Mass Effect’ at BioWare.
Reports indicate that all creative staff, including Gamble, are remaining on board. Neither Amazon nor EA has made any public comments regarding the show’s status, so this information comes from sources rather than official statements.
The series was officially announced to be in development in late 2024, although rumors had circulated since 2021 following years of unsuccessful attempts to adapt the games into a film. It will not recount Commander Shepard’s journey. Gamble mentioned in his N7 Day post last November that the show will delve into a brand-new story set within the universe’s timeline, occurring after the original trilogy, and that BioWare has been closely collaborating with Amazon on it.
This strategy mirrors that of other recent game adaptations. For instance, Amazon’s ‘Fallout’ series found success by presenting a new narrative in a familiar setting, and Casey has stated that some of the team from that show will assist in bringing ‘Mass Effect’ to life.
The project has faced its share of challenges. Earlier this year, there were claims that Prime Video requested rewrites to make the series more appealing to a broader audience, but Casey refuted those claims in April, asserting that the writers’ room remains active.
As for the release timeline, nothing is confirmed. Production Weekly had suggested a fourth-quarter 2026 production start, but that schedule is unofficial and subject to change, with no release date currently set. The series is still in pre-production, and there have been no updates regarding it moving beyond the writers’ room.
There are practical reasons for the show’s continuation. Since the series is produced by Amazon rather than BioWare, it is not dependent on the recently closed studio. This also provides EA a way to leverage the franchise’s legacy without financing a new game.
For Amazon, a ‘Mass Effect’ series presents a built-in audience and the opportunity to attract viewers who have never played the games. This strategy mirrors the approach that made ‘Fallout’ successful, and the company clearly sees potential in it.
However, none of this guarantees success. As with any project in development, there is no assurance that the series will ever make it to screens, and the closure of the studio that created the franchise raises significant questions about its future.
Still, for a fanbase that has spent the week grieving, the notion that the story isn’t over is a comforting piece of news. The saga that began in 2007 may yet find a way to continue, albeit not in the manner fans anticipated.
