‘Crystal Lake’ Showrunner Plans More Jason and Pamela Voorhees Inspired by ‘Twin Peaks’
Few horror franchises boast a hometown as notorious as ‘Friday the 13th,’ and Peacock’s ‘Crystal Lake’ finally offers fans an in-depth look at it. The prequel series debuted with all episodes available on Oct. 15, marking the first live-action expansion of the slasher saga in over a decade. Now, the showrunner is already contemplating future developments.
The journey to this point was anything but straightforward. Initially announced with Bryan Fuller as showrunner, he departed in 2024 when A24 decided to take a different approach. Brad Caleb Kane took over as showrunner, crafting a narrative that centers on Pamela Voorhees, portrayed by Linda Cardellini, during the years leading up to the events of the 1980 original.
While Peacock has yet to renew the series, Kane has been vocal about his ambitions. In an exclusive interview with Dread Central, he expressed his desire to explore the town “in sort of a ‘Twin Peaks’ David Lynch style,” a remark that has already sparked discussions among horror enthusiasts. He also indicated he has a clear vision for where a second chapter would begin.
Kane structured the first season to function as a complete narrative, even if Peacock opts not to continue. He shared with Dread Central that he aimed for it to be satisfying on its own while acknowledging that there are more stories to unfold. Critics have pointed out that the final episode resolves the main mysteries and answers significant questions.
The conclusion also leaves ample room for continuation. Jason spares Pamela’s life, and the duo becomes a formidable team, suggesting that anyone venturing near the woods or the lake could become their next victim. This setup provides a natural impetus for a potential sequel.
The comparison hinges on the town itself. With a known killer on the loose and numerous residents to encounter, Kane envisions expanding beyond Pamela’s narrative. He has stated he has a clear starting point and a general outline for a full season.
He also highlighted the show’s supporting characters. Kane mentioned to Bloody Disgusting that it’s not solely Pam’s story but also that of Crystal Lake, indicating that there are “more stories to tell” for the residents. He pointed out characters like Ralph, Dorff, and Trudy as potential drivers of a more ‘Twin Peaks’-esque atmosphere.

One question on fans’ minds is how soon the series would approach the events of the 1980 film. Kane suggested that a second season would align more closely with that timeline, though it would not directly overlap with the movie just yet. The first season set a course toward the original film without leading directly into it.
This gradual progression could help the series avoid rushing into familiar territory. It would also allow the writers more time to develop Pam and young Jason, played by Callum Vinson. The longer the show remains in the town, the more opportunities there are for the unique, character-driven storytelling that Kane envisions.

Kane has also defended one of the season’s boldest moves. The series takes a surprising turn that alters fans’ perceptions of Jason, and the showrunner acknowledges that he understands the twist may be divisive. It recontextualizes the character’s resilience in a way that is sure to ignite discussions among longtime fans.
This kind of risk is part of what makes the show intriguing. A prequel centered on a character so widely recognized could have opted for a safer approach, but this series embraces something unconventional. Whether viewers love it or loathe it, it has certainly generated conversation.
If Peacock decides to greenlight additional episodes, the creative direction appears clear. A town filled with eccentric characters, a killer lurking in the woods, and a mother-son duo could create a distinctly different kind of slasher narrative. For now, fans will have to wait to see if the streamer is ready to return to the lake.
