‘NCIS: New York’ Episode 3 Recap & Ending Explained Who Took the Shaw Kids
Every procedural has its “kids in danger” episode, often revealing more about the team than the actual case. For a spin-off still establishing its identity, such a narrative can significantly impact the ensemble’s dynamics. The latest recap and ending explained for ‘NCIS: New York’ highlights why this episode resonated so well.
Titled ‘Carousel’, the episode aired on CBS on Tuesday, October 20, and is available for streaming on Paramount+ the following day. Written by Melissa Glenn and directed by Nick Gomez, it features Elia Monte-Brown as Captain Margaret “Maggie” Shaw. LL Cool J and Scott Caan lead the charge as Sam Hanna and Nick Schaeffer.
During a family outing, Maggie and her husband Tim find themselves in a heated argument when their two children suddenly vanish from the carousel. While she went to grab hot dogs, Tim was distracted by his phone. Soon, they receive a chilling message instructing them to keep the police out and wait at their hotel.
Maggie, a Judge Advocate General prosecutor serving as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, decides to inform her boss despite the warning. This brings NCIS into the fold, and the team quickly suspects that her professional life may be the real target. Sean notices that the kidnappers’ video shows the children inside a moving truck, with a nearby bridge explaining the misleading location data.
Tim claims he was texting his brother, but in reality, he was messaging Chloe Edwards, the children’s former nanny and his affair partner. Chloe had been fired weeks prior and had followed the family to New York, knowing the safety password the kids were taught for emergencies.
The true mastermind is a man Chloe confided in, who called himself Jason and claimed he couldn’t share his last name due to a State Department job. His real identity is Devon Lancaster, a con artist facing trial over millions tied to government contracts. Chloe provided him with the family’s schedule and the safety password, allowing the kids to leave the park without raising alarms.
Lancaster’s goal was to obtain Maggie’s protected witness list. He instructs her to log into it at an internet café, threatening that handing it over would jeopardize others’ lives without any guarantee of her children’s safe return. At the team’s urging, Maggie requests proof of life first.
The new video leads Sean to an apartment building in Queens, revealing that the daughter is suffering from an allergic reaction. Although Lancaster is arrested, the children are not with him, and he has discarded the burner phone used to contact his accomplice, Lola Dambrock, a financially motivated criminal who had no intention of being paid.
The girl’s allergies become a crucial clue, guiding the team to an Indian restaurant. Dambrock fights back, but Nick subdues her, while Sam assists in carrying a child to safety. Both children receive the necessary medication and are joyfully reunited with their parents.

The case isn’t the only storyline in play. Nick receives a subpoena in an NYPD investigation involving his former partner, who is accused of corruption. While the episode does not imply Nick’s wrongdoing, it introduces a thread regarding his past.
Sam’s evening takes a turn for the worse as a blind date Nick arranged falls flat. He ends up reconnecting with a woman from his past at her jazz club, but a drink thrown in his direction makes it clear that the reception was far from warm.
Critics generally praised how the episode distributed the spotlight among the cast. TV Fanatic rated it 4 out of 5, commending how it allowed the entire ensemble to shine, alleviating concerns that the show was overly focused on Sam. The review noted that while the case itself was somewhat predictable, the real emphasis was on the team’s collaboration.
Addy and Wyatt posing as a married couple to secure a hotel room added a touch of levity. Despite having only worked together for 10 months, their final scene, where Addy confides about a friend in trouble and Wyatt simply listens, showcased their growing bond.
The next episode, ‘Homecoming’, is set to air on Tuesday, October 27. It will feature an armored truck robbery at the Naval Corps Credit Union, prompting Sam and Nick to pursue a sniper and return to Sam’s old neighborhood in Queens.
