Few TV shows captured the pop culture imagination of the ’90s quite like ‘Baywatch’. The original series ran for 11 seasons from 1989 to 2001, featuring David Hasselhoff as lifeguard Mitch Buchannon alongside Pamela Anderson and a rotating cast of beach-ready stars. It later evolved into ‘Baywatch: Hawaii’ following a setting change and major cast overhaul.

Now, Fox is set to revive the series. The network greenlit a reimagined ‘Baywatch’ in September 2025 as part of its 2026-2027 season, ordering it straight to series with 12 episodes. Co-produced by Fox Entertainment and Fremantle, the show is helmed by Matt Nix of ‘Burn Notice’ and ‘The Gifted’, with McG directing the premiere.

The new version maintains a family connection at its heart. Stephen Amell, known for ‘Arrow’ and ‘Heels’, portrays Hobie Buchannon, the once-rebellious son of Mitch, now a Baywatch captain. His life takes a turn when Charlie Vale, played by Jessica Belkin, the daughter he never knew, arrives at his doorstep hoping to become a lifeguard.

Fox released the first full trailer on Tuesday, Oct. 13, showcasing exactly what fans expect. It opens with lifeguards saving the day after an airplane carrying a message crashes into two people parasailing. The trailer also features the franchise’s signature slow-motion shots as the team rushes into the water.

The spot concludes with Hassie Harrison’s Nat telling Hobie they have the best job in the world, a sentiment they both agree on. Fox has announced that the series will premiere in January 2027, with the trailer heavily emphasizing the franchise’s iconic red swimsuits.

Livvy Dunne and Brooks Nader are two cast members drawing significant attention. Dunne, a former LSU gymnast turned social media star, is making her professional acting debut as junior lifeguard Grace. Nader plays Selene, a Zuma Beach lifeguard who becomes Hobie’s rival.

The first footage actually surfaced in May, when Amell shared a brief teaser on Instagram with the caption “I dream in slow motion.” That clip featured Nader walking down a dock in the classic firehouse-red one-piece, Dunne in matching lifeguard attire, and Amell sprinting across the sand with a rescue buoy. The promo teased the tagline “same beach, new blood.”

Filming commenced in the spring at Venice Beach and on the historic Fox lot in West Los Angeles, with the cast photographed in their red swimsuits on the first day of shooting. Fox and Fremantle also held an open casting call in Marina Del Rey in February to fill roles from series regulars to walk-ons.

Nader mentioned she had been keeping a secret before announcing her role in the series with a photo of herself holding the script. Page Six reported in March that she had been rigorously training to wear the iconic suit. Dunne also expressed her excitement about joining the show on Instagram.

The ensemble cast includes Shay Mitchell of ‘Pretty Little Liars’, Noah Beck, and Thaddeus LaGrone. Harrison, known for ‘Yellowstone’, plays Nat, a former Olympic athlete with a troubled past who serves as Hobie’s right hand. The series aims to honor its legacy, with original stars David Chokachi returning as Cody Madison and Erika Eleniak as Shauni McClain.

This blend of legacy and fresh talent appears to be a core part of Fox’s strategy. At the network’s upfront presentation, Fox’s president described the project as a top priority, indicating a strong bet on both nostalgia and the social media influence of its younger stars.

The reboot faces the challenge of balancing a ’90s beach fantasy with modern audiences. The show promises the dramatic rescues, complex relationships, and beach heroics that defined the original, but with a new cast and contemporary tensions. The trailer suggests that the slow-motion running tradition will continue, and the show is unafraid to embrace its own legacy.

For Dunne, this series marks a significant step beyond her previous screen work, which includes Prime Video’s documentary series ‘The Money Game’ about NIL in college sports. For Nader, it represents another high-profile moment following her modeling career. The success of the show will ultimately depend on audience reception when it premieres in January.
