‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Reveals Stunning New Incursion Art Highlighting Multiverse Threat
Marvel’s promotional campaign for ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has been a consistent flow of posters, trailers, and cast announcements. However, the latest piece of art stands out as it emphasizes the catastrophic event that threatens to end everything—the incursion at the core of the film.
So far, the marketing has relied heavily on star power, featuring Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom prominently alongside a vast ensemble of heroes from various universes. This approach is fitting for a film that unites the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men, including familiar faces like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, and Kelsey Grammer. Yet, the cosmic stakes have remained somewhat abstract until now.
The new image shifts that perspective. It depicts two planets colliding in a spectacular explosion of pink and violet energy, with sharp debris scattering through space. Unlike much of the previous promotional material, this image showcases no heroes, villains, or logos—just the overwhelming scale of the impending threat.
This aligns perfectly with the film’s narrative. In the MCU, an incursion refers to the collision of two universes, where the boundaries between them dissolve, leading to the potential destruction of one or both. This concept was first introduced in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ and has been building toward a significant crossover event ever since.

Marvel has been teasing elements of this for months. The recent re-release of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ as ‘Endgame Encore’ included new scenes, featuring a post-credits sequence where the TVA observes the multiverse collapsing. In this sequence, Earth-10005, the universe of Fox’s X-Men films, collides with Earth-1127, resulting in the destruction of thousands of universes.
Earlier promotional art hinted at a three-way incursion, showcasing the logos of the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men colliding. This image suggested a convergence of Earth-616, Earth-828, and Earth-10005. A new international poster also illustrated two worlds colliding behind a lineup of heroes, including Gambit, Loki, Captain America, Shuri, Professor X, Cyclops, and Mister Fantastic, with a masked Doom looming above them.
Joe Russo has described the multiverse collapse as one of the most significant events in the MCU, while Anthony Russo referred to it as the unifying principle that merges the X-Men, Avengers, and Fantastic Four universes. Reports indicate that Doom will manipulate incursions to reshape the multiverse according to his vision, setting the stage for ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.
The term ‘incursion’ originates from Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers storyline, which led into the 2015 ‘Secret Wars’ event. In those comics, once an incursion begins, two universes have only hours to decide between colliding and perishing together or sacrificing one world to save the other. This brutal choice is likely to drive the film’s emotional core.
Marvel Comics is also capitalizing on this moment. A new series of five Incursions one-shots will launch in November, starting with ‘X-Men: Incursions’ #1, revisiting untold battles from the multiverse’s final days. This indicates that the publisher recognizes the cultural significance of this storyline.

The anticipation surrounding the film is already immense. The July trailer achieved the second-largest movie trailer launch in history and became Disney’s most-viewed trailer to date. Domestic pre-sales have reportedly surpassed $50 million, with over 70% of tickets sold for premium Infinity Vision screens.
The film also arrives shortly after ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, which set a new Marvel opening-weekend record of $360 million worldwide. This raises expectations even higher, especially since ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to open on December 18, competing against ‘Dune: Part Three’. Its sequel, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, is scheduled for December 17, 2027.
While the new art does not disclose any specific plot details, it effectively establishes the tone. It visually represents the stakes involved when heroes from three universes finally confront a villain who is always three steps ahead.
