Does Tanjiro Die in Demon Slayer
Demon Slayer’s story follows the adventure of a boy who was an ordinary coal burner. He journeys and joins the Demon Slayer Corps to turn his sister back into a human. The path of a Demon Slayer isn’t an easy one, as death via an attack from a demon happens often. So does Tanjiro die?
The answer is complicated: He dies, but he doesn’t stay dead. Muzan manages to transfer his blood and emotions to Tanjiro’s body, effectively reviving the boy as a demon. He returns as a human after being given the same medicine that turned Nezuko human again.
While he does ultimately survive the whole ordeal, he did die at some point. His death allowed Muzan to create the most terrifying Demon to walk on in Japan. Let’s look more into Tanjiro’s death in this article.
How Does Tanjiro Die in Demon Slayer?
Towards the end of the fight between the Demon Slayers and Muzan, the Demon tries to protect himself from numerous attacks from the surviving Demon Slayers. He turns into a demonic baby and absorbs Tanjiro, who was attempting to pin Muzan in place. While Muzan tries to escape, Tanjiro, who is inside him, ignites his blade to injure the Demon from the inside.
At this point, Tanjiro was already dying after sustaining several injuries from the previous fight. However, by the time Tanjiro died, and before Muzan completely disintegrated, the Demon managed to transfer his blood and memories into Tanjiro’s body. Because of this transfer, Tanjiro was revived as the Demon.
Muzan mentions that Tanjiro cells were still alive, but let’s note that his heart and breathing have already stopped. So, Tanjiro did temporarily die before he was revived.
What Happened to Tanjiro When He Became a Demon
As a demon, he inherited the emotions of Muzan. Even Muzan himself called him the Demon King since he would be able to survive sunlight. As a demon, Tanjiro showed that he was mindless; this might be the result because he is still a newly transformed demon. He attacked everyone, even biting Nezuko in this state.
However, even after biting Nezuko, he refused to harm her; this was a sign that his spirit was still fighting the transformation effects. While a newborn demon, he displayed the strength between Lower and Upper-Rank Demon.
According to Yushiro, Tanjiro’s potential as a demon may even be higher than Nezuko and Muzan.
How Was He Transformed Back to a Human?
Similar to Nezuko, Tanjiro also gets injected with Tamao’s medicine. However, injecting the medicine was no easy feat for the Demon Slayers to do. Kanao had to use Flower Breathing, Final Form: Equinoctial Vermillion Eye to approach and Inject Tanjiro with the drug.
Once the drug started to take effect, Tanjiro’s consciousness started to fight off Muzan’s spirit. Muzan tries to convince Tanjiro that he can become a powerful being if he allows himself to be consumed by desire. Tanjiro refuses the offer and allows himself to be pulled by the hands of his loved ones in his vision.
After the vision, Tanjiro wakes up as a full human being. To everyone’s relief, Tanjiro and Kanao managed to survive the battle, and no more traces of Muzan were left.
What Happens to the Demon Slayer Corps in the End?
With the major threat finally gone for good, the Demon Corpse had decided to disband. A couple of them thank the Ubuyashiki family for allowing them to avenge their loved ones.
Tanjiro, who managed to recover his eye and arm, realized he could no longer use them. The siblings agree that all of this is better than becoming a demon. When the main 3 heroes are fully healed, they all decide to make their way to Tanjiro’s home.
The Manga’s next chapter cuts into modern Day Japan. We can safely say The ex-members of the Demon Corps have lived their life and died at this point, but they have left their descendants. The last panel reveals that the Demon Slayer Corps managed to take one final commemorative photo together before going their separate ways.
A World Without Demons
Thanks to the defeat of Muzen, people are now allowed to enjoy their life without fear. The Demon Corps disbanded because there was no longer a need for them. The world can now progress and finally move forward to a new era.
The extended chapter of the Manga shows that demons are something of a myth. Without demons, the world has gone and forgotten about the threat. Japan in the Manga is now the Japan that people are familiar with.
Readers get to see new characters, who are most likely the descendants of the remaining Demon Corps who survived the final battle. A photo of the old group and Tanjiro’s earrings are also found in the Kamado Household.
Did Tanjiro Get Married to Anyone in Demon Slayer?
It was hinted that Tanjiro’s love interest is Kamao, and it seems that the two did leave descendants. Readers get to meet Tanjiro’s descendants, Kanata and Sumihiko Kamado, in the extra chapter. While Sumihiko is the spitting image of Tanjiro, Kanata seems to resemble Kanao. So readers can guess that Tanjiro did end up raising a family with Kanao.
