A Glitching Ultron Painting at D23 Teases a Major ‘VisionQuest’ Twist
Marvel’s presence at D23 this weekend has turned into an exciting scavenger hunt for fans eager to uncover every detail about ‘VisionQuest’ ahead of its October premiere. With costume reveals, merchandise leaks, and interactive booth displays, the studio has been providing just enough information to fuel speculation without confirming anything outright.
This strategy reached a new high point with one of the show floor’s more creative features. Instead of a static poster or prop case, Marvel created an interactive display designed to surprise fans, much like the show itself is expected to do.
James Spader’s Ultron glitches through a portrait frame inside the ‘VisionQuest’ booth at D23, showcasing his character’s human form mid-transition. Half of the image displays his classic robotic design from 2015’s ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, while the other half reveals his face as flesh and blood.
This effect perfectly mirrors the speculation surrounding Ultron’s return to the franchise. Showrunner Terry Matalas has previously described Ultron’s comeback as occurring in an “amazing, unique way,” appearing throughout the series in both robotic and human forms, with the two identities crafted to feel genuinely distinct rather than just a costume change.
This dual identity carries significant thematic weight, considering the show’s central focus. ‘VisionQuest’ follows Paul Bettany’s White Vision as he strives to reclaim his humanity, and Ultron, his creator in the comics, oscillating between machine and man throughout the series reinforces the tension playing out in their relationship.
Bettany has expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Spader on the project, calling his co-star’s performance both delicious and genuinely funny to watch. He praised their teamwork, telling Bleeding Cool that both actors enjoyed working together, while also commending Matalas for his strong direction of the overall project.
The glitching Ultron display was not the only detail fans scrutinized this weekend. Some observers noted that the artwork appearing to be hacked by Ultron may be linked to Jim Hammond, the original android Human Torch from Marvel’s early comic era, whose presence in the MCU has only been hinted at as an Easter egg in 2011’s ‘Captain America: The First Avenger.’
This connection is significant due to Hammond’s comic book history with Vision. In the source material, Ultron reportedly used schematics from the original Human Torch to help create Vision’s body, making any potential appearance from the character directly relevant to the show’s central themes of android identity and creation.
Whether this particular Easter egg will pay off remains unconfirmed, but it aligns perfectly with the show’s impressive lineup of MCU AI characters receiving human forms for the first time. Emily Hampshire plays E.D.I.T.H., Orla Brady plays F.R.I.D.A.Y., and James D’Arcy returns as J.A.R.V.I.S., while T’Nia Miller makes her MCU debut as Jocasta.
‘VisionQuest’ is set to premiere on Disney+ on October 14, concluding the trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued through ‘Agatha All Along.’ With Marvel expected to unveil the show’s first full trailer during this weekend’s D23 presentation, fans may not have to wait much longer to see how Spader’s glitching Ultron actually moves and speaks on screen.
