Marvel’s gaming ambitions have evolved significantly over the past few years, resulting in a mixed bag of outcomes that influence how the studio approaches its flagship franchises on consoles and PC. With the immense popularity of ‘Marvel Rivals’ and standout successes like ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man’, the publisher has clearly identified what resonates with players, even as some ventures have struggled to find their footing.

This inconsistent track record makes any new rumors about a major Marvel title particularly intriguing. Superhero games thrive on execution, and fans have learned to approach news about new titles related to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes with cautious optimism rather than unbridled excitement.

This brings us to the latest buzz surrounding a potential new ‘Avengers’ game, which insider Daniel Richtman claims is currently under development. Richtman, who shared this information with his followers, indicates that this new project will not be connected to ‘Marvel’s Avengers’, the 2020 live-service game developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix.

This distinction is crucial, especially considering the previous game’s lackluster performance. ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ debuted to mixed reviews, receiving some praise for its single-player campaign and hero-specific abilities, but ultimately faltered due to repetitive gameplay and an uninspired endgame loop that failed to keep players engaged. The game was discontinued in 2023, leaving behind a rocky legacy.

Details beyond this basic confirmation remain limited for now. Richtman has not disclosed a developer, publisher, platform, or release window for the new title, and Marvel has yet to officially acknowledge the project, leaving much of this report in the realm of speculation.

Nonetheless, the timing aligns with a broader trend of Marvel exploring various gaming avenues simultaneously. This isn’t the first time rumors of a new Avengers-related project have emerged, with earlier whispers hinting at a separate, unconfirmed MCU-connected game that may or may not be the same project Richtman is currently discussing.

It’s also important to note that Marvel has historically granted individual game studios considerable creative freedom, rather than enforcing strict continuity across its titles. Marvel Games VP Bill Rosemann has previously stated that the company does not require developers to integrate their projects into a shared universe, allowing teams the liberty to take bold creative risks without the burden of impacting other games in the lineup.

This approach could benefit the new project, particularly if Marvel aims to completely distance itself from the previous Square Enix game. Given the tremendous success of ‘Marvel Rivals’ and the acclaim surrounding Insomniac’s ‘Spider-Man’ titles, there is clearly a demand for well-executed Marvel gaming experiences, provided the studio behind this new Avengers project can deliver.

For now, fans are left to speculate about who might be developing the game and what form it could ultimately take—whether it will be another live-service experiment or a more focused single-player adventure akin to recent Marvel gaming successes. With Marvel remaining tight-lipped on the subject, concrete details are unlikely to surface until the studio is prepared for an official announcement.
