Indie filmmaking duos often struggle to maintain their unique, handmade quality when they receive larger budgets and star-studded casts. This balancing act becomes even more challenging as A-list names join the project, each bringing their own expectations for its direction.

David and Nathan Zellner, the creative minds behind the deadpan Bigfoot tale ‘Sasquatch Sunset,’ faced this exact challenge with their latest film, which boasts one of the year’s most eclectic ensemble casts. Early reviews indicate that they have successfully navigated these complexities.

‘Alpha Gang’ premiered to favorable reviews after its debut at the Telluride Film Festival, currently holding an impressive 83 percent on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer. This sci-fi comedy follows a group of alien invaders disguised as a 1950s leather-clad biker gang, sent to conquer Earth from a war-torn region of Eastern Europe. However, their ruthless mission begins to unravel as they encounter what the film depicts as humanity’s most toxic and contagious condition: emotion.

Cate Blanchett stars as Alpha One, the gang’s commanding leader, and also serves as a producer on the film. She is joined by Chris Pine, Dave Bautista, Léa Seydoux, Lily-Rose Depp, Adria Arjona, Bae Doona, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Riley Keough, with each alien character identified by numerical Alpha codenames instead of personal names.

The film embraces its quirky premise, showcasing the gang’s downtime spent listening to period-appropriate music from The Crystals and Ricky Nelson on a jukebox while actively suppressing their emotions, treating them as a spreading disease rather than a natural human experience. They also exhibit curiosity about mundane earthly things like ants, plants, and hard candy, all while donning chrome armor beneath their leather jackets.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Blanchett described the film’s tone as “alien Chekhovian,” a phrase that encapsulates how the Zellners blend absurdist comedy with genuine emotional stakes. Director David Zellner elaborated on the setting, explaining that placing the story in 1950s Eastern Europe allows the filmmakers to frame the narrative from the aliens’ perspective, using the biker aesthetic to portray them as ultimate outsiders.

The current cast of ‘Alpha Gang’ was not the original lineup. Channing Tatum, Zoë Kravitz, and Steven Yeun were previously attached to the project but exited during filming in Budapest in June 2025, ultimately replaced by Pine, Depp, and Arjona.

The production relied on practical effects and detailed period costuming, filming in remote locations across Croatia, Hungary, and Bulgaria. Cinematographer Mike Gioulakis, known for his work on ‘It Follows’ and ‘Us,’ contributed a distinct visual style to the film’s Brutalist-inspired production design. Critics have described the result as a mostly winsome ensemble effort, where every performer fully commits to the film’s bizarre premise.

With its strong festival reception and a genuinely impressive cast willing to embrace the absurdity, ‘Alpha Gang’ appears poised to become one of this year’s most memorable indie surprises.
