Amazon Cancels Planned ‘Stargate’ Series Before Production
Amazon has opted not to proceed with its anticipated ‘Stargate’ television series, as reported exclusively by Variety. The project had received a full series order back in November 2025 but has now been scrapped before it could enter production.
The series was being developed by Martin Gero, who was set to take on the roles of writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Gero is a familiar name among ‘Stargate’ enthusiasts, having previously contributed as a writer for both ‘Stargate SG-1’ and ‘Stargate Atlantis.’
According to Variety, a source close to the situation revealed that Amazon executives were concerned that Gero’s rendition of the series would primarily resonate with existing ‘Stargate’ fans rather than drawing in a broader audience. Due to these apprehensions, the decision was made to halt the project.
Despite the cancellation of this specific series, Amazon remains committed to the ‘Stargate’ franchise. Variety indicates that the company is actively exploring alternative avenues to expand this science-fiction universe in the future. Amazon acquired the ‘Stargate’ property following its purchase of MGM Studios, the original studio behind the franchise, and has been investigating new ‘Stargate’ projects since 2022.
While this cancellation may disappoint fans eager for a new chapter in the franchise, Martin Gero will continue his collaboration with Amazon. He is still under an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios and is anticipated to develop other projects for the company.
Very little was revealed about the canceled series. No official story details or plot information were disclosed during its development, leaving fans without a clear understanding of Gero’s vision for the ‘Stargate’ universe or the direction the new show would take.
Several notable figures from the franchise were attached to the project. Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell were executive producers through Safehouse Pictures. Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who collaborated on the original ‘Stargate’ film in the 1990s, were also involved as executive producers. Additionally, Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, both significant contributors to the history of ‘Stargate’ television, were brought on as consulting producers.
The ‘Stargate’ franchise originated with the 1994 film directed by Roland Emmerich and co-written by Emmerich and Dean Devlin. The film starred James Spader and Kurt Russell, introducing audiences to the concept of traveling through mysterious portals known as Stargates.
The film later inspired ‘Stargate SG-1,’ which became one of the most successful science-fiction television series ever produced. The show ran for 10 seasons and featured actors such as Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge. Its success led to further projects, including ‘Stargate Atlantis,’ which aired for five seasons between 2004 and 2008.
Over the years, the franchise expanded with two direct-to-video films and several other television productions. The most recent series was ‘Stargate Origins,’ released in 2018.
For now, fans will have to wait and see what Amazon plans next for the ‘Stargate’ universe, as the company continues to seek new opportunities for this long-standing franchise, according to Variety.
