Andrew Garfield Shares His Unique Condition for Returning as Spider-Man
Since his unexpected cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans have been buzzing about the possibility of Garfield’s Peter Parker returning for another Marvel project. Each new Spider-Man film sparks fresh speculation, with many hoping to see him don the suit once more.
In a recent appearance on The Playlist’s “The Discourse” podcast with Mike DeAngelo, Garfield was asked what kind of storyline would entice him to reprise his role as Spider-Man. He was on the show promoting his new family fantasy film The Magic Faraway Tree, where he stars alongside Claire Foy.
The question arose amid ongoing rumors that Garfield might appear in future Spider-Man films, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day. DeAngelo noted how fans often speculate that Garfield has secretly filmed another Marvel appearance whenever a new project is announced.
Garfield shared that he doesn’t have a definitive idea of what would draw him back, but he emphasized that it would need to be something entirely different from what audiences have seen before.
“I don’t know. I really don’t know. I would need it to be very, very odd. I would need it to be very strange, and I would need it to be completely unconventional and almost—I wouldn’t say boring—but I would want it to be just completely unexpected, like a genre of Spider-Man that you’ve never seen before, that feels very left field.”
He even suggested one unconventional idea that could make his version of Spider-Man feel fresh: “Maybe like a road trip movie.”
A Spider-Man road trip film would be a departure from anything Marvel has produced so far. Rather than focusing on epic battles, villains, or multiverse events, this story could delve into Peter Parker’s character in a more personal and surprising manner.
Garfield’s comments align with his previous statements about returning to the role. While he hasn’t completely dismissed the idea of playing Spider-Man again, he has made it clear that he seeks a story with genuine significance rather than just nostalgia. He desires a narrative that has a real purpose.
His return in Spider-Man: No Way Home provided fans with a fresh perspective on his Peter Parker. The film allowed his character to confront the loss and pain stemming from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, offering him a chance for emotional closure.
Thus, any future appearance would need to introduce something new rather than merely rehashing old themes. Garfield seems interested in a project that takes creative risks and showcases a side of Spider-Man that audiences have yet to see.
Whether Marvel Studios or Sony Pictures would actually consider creating a unique Spider-Man road trip movie remains to be seen. However, Garfield’s comments have sparked new discussions among fans.
For now, the actor is focused on other projects, including The Magic Faraway Tree, directed by Ben Gregor and written by Simon Farnaby. The film tells the story of a family that relocates to the English countryside and discovers a magical tree that transports them to various fantasy worlds. Garfield portrays Tim, the father, alongside Claire Foy as Polly.
