Andy Serkis is making his return to Middle-earth with ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’, taking on multiple roles this time. In addition to reprising his iconic role as Gollum, Serkis is also directing the film, marking him as the first individual other than Peter Jackson to helm a live-action ‘Lord of the Rings’ movie.

In a recent interview with Mashable’s Belen Edwards, Serkis shared exciting insights about the upcoming film ahead of its production in New Zealand. He emphasized that while the story remains within the familiar universe fans cherish, it also introduces fresh elements.

He stated, “The joy of [The Hunt for Gollum] is that it’s entirely its own story, but it fits perfectly into the lore, the tone, the feel of the Middle-earth films that were created by Peter Jackson 25 years ago.”

Set between ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, the film follows Gandalf and Aragorn as they embark on a quest to find Gollum prior to the onset of the War of the Ring.

A significant change in this film is the recasting of Aragorn, with Jamie Dornan taking over the role from Viggo Mortensen, who portrayed the character in the original trilogy. Serkis noted that this iteration of Aragorn is younger and at a different stage in his life.

He mentioned, “We’re calling him Strider in our movie. He is at a different point in his journey, so he is slightly different to the Aragorn that we see later on.” Serkis added, “It’s a version of himself that’s been out in the wilderness as a Dúnedain Ranger. I’ll leave it at that for the moment, but Jamie is perfect for this part of the journey of the character.”

The film will also see the return of several actors from previous Middle-earth films, including Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, and Lee Pace. New faces joining the franchise include Kate Winslet and Leo Woodall.

Addressing concerns about Warner Bros. possibly overextending the ‘Lord of the Rings’ franchise, Serkis acknowledged the studio’s recent release of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’ and its ongoing development of additional titles.

However, Serkis is confident that ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ will stand out on its own. He remarked, “It’s not just a nostalgia film.” He elaborated, “[The Hunt for Gollum] adheres to that world, but it certainly has a freshness and a newness in terms of the actual story.”

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ is currently slated for release in 2027.
