Anthony Russo Hints ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Has More Cast Surprises to Unveil
Marvel Studios has been busy unveiling an impressive ensemble for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, with fans dubbing one of its reveal events “Aven-Chairs Assemble.” The cast list already features a mix of returning Avengers, resurrected X-Men actors, and the Fantastic Four’s first family, creating a lineup that feels like a greatest-hits compilation from the franchise’s over twenty-year history.
Typically, such a large cast would indicate that a studio has revealed most of its surprises before the film’s release. However, with the movie less than three months away from hitting theaters, co-director Anthony Russo has hinted that there are still more surprises to come.
During a Q&A after a screening of ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’, Russo confirmed that Marvel has not yet finished announcing the complete cast for ‘Doomsday’, despite an earlier reveal of 27 cast members spanning three different franchises.
“The cast is so large, and we’ve announced some of the cast, and we haven’t announced some of the cast,” Russo stated at the event, as reported by GamesRadar+. “I get confused myself over who we’ve announced and not announced, so I have to just slow down.”
His brother and co-director Joe Russo was unable to attend due to illness, leaving Anthony to handle the questions alone. He took the opportunity to provide insight into the current state of production, revealing that the film is still a work in progress, despite its impending release.
“Joe and I are still very deep in the process of finishing Doomsday,” Russo explained. “We always say we’re not done with a movie until they pry it out of our cold, dead hands. So, it’s a very iterative process for us… from the time of conception all the way to final delivery of the film. So it is alive, and we’re still working with it.”
This ongoing editing process is not uncommon for a project of this magnitude, but it suggests that Marvel may still have casting details that remain under wraps, even with the release date approaching. Russo did not provide any clues about which characters or actors might still be waiting to be announced.
The current cast is already impressive, featuring Robert Downey Jr. as Victor von Doom, alongside returning Avengers like Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, and Sebastian Stan, as well as Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova and the Fantastic Four lineup, including Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
Additionally, the surprise return of Bryan Singer-era X-Men actors such as Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, and Alan Cumming has reshaped expectations for how deeply the film will delve into Marvel’s cinematic history. With such a star-studded cast already confirmed, any further announcements would only enhance what is poised to be one of the largest ensembles in blockbuster history.

Russo’s remarks come as ‘Endgame Encore’ continues its theatrical run, featuring approximately four minutes of new footage that directly connects to ‘Doomsday.’ This re-release has already contributed to pushing the original ‘Endgame’ past $2.8 billion at the global box office, keeping Marvel’s marketing efforts focused on building excitement ahead of December.
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to premiere in theaters on December 18, Marvel has a limited timeframe to unveil any remaining casting surprises.
