Marvel Studios has been teasing the connections between ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and its highly anticipated sequel, but much of the speculation has stemmed from trailers and leaked footage rather than direct insights from the creators. This changed recently when co-director Anthony Russo participated in a Q&A following a New York screening of ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ the re-release currently in theaters ahead of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’s’ December launch.

Russo, who directed both films alongside his brother Joe, was asked how his perspective on ‘Endgame’ has evolved after working on its sequel. His response highlighted one of the most emotionally impactful moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: the ending where Steve Rogers decides to remain in the past with Peggy Carter instead of returning to his original timeline.

During the event, Russo explained that this pivotal moment at the conclusion of ‘Endgame’ takes on a new significance when viewed through the lens of what follows. He remarked, “we sort of play one beat past where Steve Rogers’ story ended with Peggy Carter, and in that moment, that’s where Doomsday is born.”

This comment refers to new footage included in ‘Endgame Encore,’ which alters the film’s original conclusion. Instead of simply ending with Steve and Peggy dancing into the credits, the updated version introduces a scene where Loki, clad in his Time Variance Authority uniform, arrives at their door while Steve hides nearby. When Peggy inquires about who is there, Loki cryptically states that he’s not there to assist her, but rather both of them.

Russo didn’t provide further details on what this visit sets into motion, but the implications are substantial. A separate post-credits scene in ‘Endgame Encore’ takes place inside the TVA, showcasing thousands of universes experiencing incursions simultaneously, suggesting that Loki’s encounter occurs sometime after the events of ‘Loki’ Season 2.

Fans have been aware since the first ‘Doomsday’ teaser that Steve Rogers, portrayed once again by Chris Evans, would be returning to the franchise, appearing alongside Peggy Carter and even holding a baby, presumably their child. This teaser reframed what many thought was a clean, happy ending for the character, suggesting instead that his quiet life post-‘Endgame’ is interrupted by something far more significant.

Discussing Evans’ surprise return, director Nia DaCosta revealed that Steve’s comeback had been in the works for “probably years,” having visited the set where the reveal was filmed long before the teaser was made public. This level of advanced planning aligns with Russo’s comments, indicating that Marvel intentionally crafted this connection between the two films rather than retrofitting it later.

With Russo confirming that Steve and Peggy’s storyline is directly linked to the origins of the threat in ‘Doomsday,’ fans now have a new piece of the puzzle as they anticipate the film’s release. The specifics of how Loki’s visit unfolds and its implications for Steve’s family remain unclear, but it’s evident that Marvel views this moment as foundational to the larger multiversal crisis awaiting audiences in December.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hits theaters December 18, giving fans a few more months to speculate about the depth of the connection between Steve and Peggy.
